Cairina moschata

Habitat: Wetlands near forested areas; trees used for roosting and nesting, feed in shallow areas of flooded vegetation. Wild birds are wary, and spend considerable amounts of time in trees, often making them difficult to find, approach, and observe.

Description: 25 -34" (64 - 86 cm). Wild Muscovy Ducks overall black in coloration with iridescent dorsal plumage and white wing patches. Fleshy growths (caruncles) around face and bill, especially noticeable on males. Plumage of domesticated Muscovies ranges from pure white through grays, browns, and blacks.

Comments: A domesticated species; by the 1400's Columbus reported West Indian natives keeping waterfowl that were likely this species, and Spanish conquistadors in the 1500's saw wild-caught Muscovy Ducks being kept at Indian villages in Brazil. During breeding season found alone or in small groups; slightly larger groups (up to 16 individuals) seen in the non-breeding season.
