Botaurus lentiginosus

American bittern is a heron that hides well in high grass and lives near water, particularly still water with high grass like swamps, marshes, bogs, and ponds. They are common but rarely seen because of their ability to camouflage. They eat amphibians, fish, and reptiles. They winter in the southern states and migrate north in the winter and are year-round residents on the California coastal areas. They are protected birds.
