Some consider it to be art, but it is an illegal form of vandalism when performed on public land or private property without permission of the owner. It is usually spray painted, but can also be scratched or written with pen or marker. It can consist of words, symbols, or elaborate drawings.
This label should be used only for modern graffiti and not ancient pictographs or petroglyphs which some consider to be historical graffiti.
