Pinus coulteri

A Coastal and Transverse ranges pine of California and the northern Baja of Mexico, it occurs in numerous discontinuous populations from just north of the San Francisco Bay to the northern quarter of the Baja Peninsula. This pine is very similar in appearance to the related Jeffrey and Ponderosa, and may be hard to tell apart when growing nearby if you do not have cones to compare. Coulter has large cones with spiny back pointing scales, and the cones are 8 to 16 inches long. Leaves are needle like, and in fascicles or bundles of three, green to glaucous, and 6 to 12 inches long. Trees can grow to 80 feet tall, and just over 3 feet in diameter, at breast height.

This tree tends to occupy drier locations than Jeffrey or Ponderosa, and can grow quite low on the wetter side of the mountains, but tends to be rather high on the dry side. When hiking the Skyline/ Cactus to Clouds, this is the first pine observed, not the Jeffrey Pines, which are dominant higher up when you reach Long Valley. Not to be confused with the 5 needles per fascicle Sugar Pines, also growing on the upper Skyline Trail.
