Speyeria atlantis

Common Names:
Habitat: Flowery openings among deciduous and coniferous forests; frequently along streams or in moist meadows. Range spans the continent.
Description: 1 3/4"-2 5/8". Above, orange-brown with complexblack pattern of spots, bars and chevrons and broadly darkened veins. Black margins. Forward wing orange on basal 2/3 with black marks as above and silver spots near paler tip. Hind wing disk has triangular light spots along margin that tend to be unsilvered in the West.Members of this species have silver spots and chocolate-brown hind wing disks below. However, in warmer and hillside habitats they often lack silver spots and usually have reddish-brown undersides. Some are in between, with half-silvered spots. Solar radiation has been suggested as a major influence on fritillary variation. Moisture and temperature are other related factors which could affect wing patterns from place to place.
Comments: See also Aphrodite Fritillary Speyeria aphrodite which is similar but in the White Mountains.
