Passing through a pitch pine lowland. Areas that are super scrubby like this are indicative of a past excessive fire regime after the "virgin" forest was cut, and then an extended era of no fire allowing what is basically a shrub forest to emerge. Then, when it burns, it is super hot due to fuel build up. Sometimes they are managed with lower intensity fire, but mostly they look to be ignored in the forest until they blow up.
