The HUGE Bitterroot Valley is 96 miles long with the Sapphire Mountains on the other side starting below Lost Pass Trail which Wendy and I would drive in a week or so. The vegetation in the valley has been significantly transformed. Originally it was covered in sagebrush.
I was just reading that Hamilton is 12,000 people; sure doesn't seem like it. That's about the same population as we have in Havre.; except it's a lot prettier and warmer here in winter.
More of what I didn't know: The Bitterroot Valley had nearly a million apple trees in the early 1900s, and was one of the world's largest producers of MacIntosh apples at that time. Irrigation was provided by about 80 miles of canals (AMR I did see lots of square ponds along the highway). Although the Bitterroot Valley's orchards became less competitive with apple orchards in Washington state after hailstorms in 1922 and 1923, it is still home to one of the nation's largest cider orchards.
Stuff I did know that most people wouldn't is the gal who won Jr Miss for MT in 1972 was from here.
