It was a quick little climb that provided quite the view.

Based on the markings on the support pillar of the Observation Tower at 40 Acre Lake, there are three significant flood levels recorded from recent history.The blue signs indicate the following years and water levels:
2017Hurricane HarveyThis is the highest mark on the tower, reaching several feet up the main support beam.
2016 Tax Day / Memorial Day FloodsThis mark is the middle sign, representing the major flooding events of that spring.
2015 Memorial Day FloodThis is the lowest of the three marks, showing the initial major flood of that three-year cycle.

These markers serve as a stark reminder of the park's role as a natural drainage basin for the Brazos River watershed. During these years, much of the trail system you are standing on would have been completely submerged under several feet of water.
