This was the best find of the whole trip: It is a baby Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus) Rattlesnake. These are a protected species in Arizona and said to be one of the most primitive rattlesnakes in the U.S. Their range is supposedly in SE Arizona, but here is a specimen way up in Gila County.
