The beach was wide enough for four distinct bands of sand: nearest the water, hard pack where your foot does not make an impression; then, to the high tide line, was semi-hard good walking, but your foot leaves an impression; then above the slight high tide hump, semi-soft; then by the dunes, normal soft, slow-walking sand. Then in some spots there are also these mud-flat like soupy sand areas.
