A diamond trail marker tacked to a tree. I suspect these are fairly old and have broken and fallen off of many of the trees as the markers got brittle with age and the trees grew in circumference popping them off of the tacks. I would later find a few of these at the south end of trail 10 where there was no longer any visible sign of the trail other than these markers.
