My first encounter with an Arizona Giant Centipede which can grow up to 8 inches long. This guy was approaching that length. They have a pair of fang-like, venom-filled, modified front legs known as gnathopods. "Bites" can be painful, but "generally" not life-threatening to humans or larger pets. however they can be fatal to small reptiles or rodents. They also can move fairly fast which I discovered when I tried to move him out of the grass for a better photo with the tip of my trekking pole. He took a run towards my feet giving me a good scare and causing me to miss the better photo opportunity.
