The trail from Orchard Camp to Bear Harbor follows a drainage that parallels the coast. There were groves of large eucalyptus trees, some of the largest I've seen in California. These trees are not indigenous and were brought to California by Australians during the California gold rush in the 1850s. By the early 1900s, thousands of acres of eucalyptus were planted with the encouragement of the state government.
