The bark is kind of cinnamon-colored, and fooled me into thinking "Ponderosa" the first few times I saw one. The foxtails often have strong horizontal grooves in their bark, dividing it into "plates," which you don't see on the Ponderosas - and the foxtails don't smell like vanilla.
