A species of maple that is adapted to dry conditions -- it has small compound leaves instead of the big, broad single leaves that are produced by maples in other climates. You can also see the mixture of rock types here -- white Coconino Sandstone, red Schnebly Formation, and dark gray basalt from the big lava flow that came from the San Francisco Peaks area.
