Here, bright red-purple sedimentary rock emerges amidst the hardened granites and schists at the lowest levels of the Canyon. Continents shifts and geological tiltings pushed these sedimentary rocks out of horizontal alignment, and thus these redish hues appear sporadically among the rocks at river level.
