From my observation and reading, this represents a typical way the canyon grows, i.e. by large rock cleavages of hard cliffs, as underlying softer rock dissolves or weathers away in small pieces. At some point, the hard cliffs grow large, unsupported overhangs, and the weight plus splitting, for example by ice expansion, dislodges the wall in large chunks.
