Lake San Cristobal, it was near the right end of the lake that Alfred Packer feasted on the bodies of the five men he had been guiding through shoulder deep snow in the winter of 1874. After running out of food and energy, Packer killed 4 in their sleep with an axe and the fifth after a struggle. After eating them he was able to hike out and survive the winter. Nearly 10 years later in 1883 he was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison.
