UL: I was surprised to see the Queen Victoria Agave had a stalk as I've never seen them with a stalk. As with many agaves, the Queen Victoria blooms at maturity, at approximately 10-15 years, sending up a tall stalk of yellow flowers that turn reddish-purple. Native to the Mexican desert, this agave is cold hardy to 10-15° F.

LR was very interesting, those spikes were only on the lower end of the trunk: The tree is deciduous and will drop its leaves in the early winter. Ethnobotany: The seeds of the Ceiba insignis are embedded within silky white floss, commonly called paina or kapok (or capoc), a word derived from the name of famous kapok tree of Central America, known scientifically as the Ceiba pentandra.

Why does the Silk Floss Tree have thorns?
These scale insects feed via sucking up the sap from the Silk Floss Tree's phloem. One functional adaptation to the environment is that the tree developed thorns to discourage animals from climbing up the tree and damaging their trunk or bark especially at an early age when they're more vulnerable.
