MANY GLACIER overlooking Sherburne Lake (constructed in between 1914 and 1921; the construction of the dam inundated several small lakes ) toward Mount Grinnell. The reservoir is the principal water storage component of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Milk River Project, which provides irrigation water to north central Montana farms.
Lake Sherburne is a manmade reservoir (created from regulating the flows of Swiftcurrent Creek), named after the settler, Joseph Sherburne. He settled in the area (Browning) in 1896 and was the proprietor of the Sherburne Mercantile Company which had stores in towns in the area Browning, Babb and East Glacier.
At 6 miles in length, there is plenty of shoreline to explore, and plenty of serene water for boating and fishing. However, the fishing is less than spectacular. The lake provides fishing for northern pike and brook trout, although the fluctuating levels of the lake hamper the brook trout fishing.
