Approx 12.7mls in from Mammoth at 4950' a-top Boulder Mtn begins the serious 4x4 downhill on the legendary "Carpet Hill" (a .7ml drop of 650+ feet) on a loose-rocky, rutted, gnarly, washed-out road with sharp turns too; Then if you are able to safely make it to the creek bottom and you don't intend to drive all the way through (+57 miles) to Hwy 70, you must be prepared to climb back up Carpet Hill; Notice the colorful carpet remnants which have been in place here since the 1950's to aid in traction and help prevent erosion (This pic is courtesy of HAZ-ssk44);
