My guess is that most of the upper slopes of the Catalinas will look like these fern covered slopes in the coming decades as infrequent hot fires that are uncontrollable replace the frequent lower intensity fires that once burned here 200 years ago. That is, unless the aspen can take hold and remain moist to provide a fire break.
