After Thai dinner at Tina's in downtown Hilo, we stopped by the Big Island Candy Store. These trees were in the parking lot.
Bottom:
Foxtail palms are native to Queensland, Australia, and thrive in tropical and subtropical climates, similar to Hilo, Hawaii.
Growth:
In Hilo, they are known to be robust and may even require more frequent fertilization due to the high rainfall.
Appearance:
The "plumose" (feathery) fronds and unique appearance make them a popular landscape choice.
Growth Factors:
They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining sandy soil, which is common in Hilo.
Top: Samanea saman (also known as the Monkeypod tree or Rain Tree) is commonly found in Hilo, Hawaii. It is native to Central and South America but has been widely introduced to Hawaii. The tree is often used as a landscape tree and is known for its large, broad canopy.
As the tree matures, it produces a spreading canopy and begins to bear flowers and fruit. The tree can live for over 100 years and continues to provide benefits to the ecosystem throughout its lifespan.
