Mammillaria is one of the largest genera in the cactus family, with currently 200 known species and varieties recognized. Most of the mammillarias are native to Mexico, while some come from the Southwestern United States, the Caribbean, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuela.

the most common native Mammillaria is the Mammillaria grahamii, or Arizona fishhook cactus, which can be found in desert landscapes and blooms around the monsoon season. It thrives in full sun but appreciates afternoon shade in hot weather, and needs a well-drained soil mix
