I finally found the low down on this back in January 2021... rather gruesome actually, from a message board:
"I don’t remember all the details but it was a gun sale that went wrong. Kid drive out to buy a shotgun from some people he didn’t know, ended up getting shot, put in his Blazer and they torched the truck. There is a memorial cross on the mountain top just north of the Fireside community center that his family put up. If the sun is just right, you can see the sun reflecting off of the metal cross.
I’ll try to find the sources of the info. I live in the area and that lead me to deep dive one day.
Here is an excerpt.
"On September 8, 1998, Charlie Bremer went with Petitioner (Bruce Lee Scott) and Ramon Alva to a desert area north of Phoenix, thinking he would sell them a gun. (Exhibit J: R.T. 4/6/00, at 19–34.) Petitioner shot and killed Bremer, and he and Alva then burned Bremer’s truck with Bremer’s body in it. (Id.) Petitioner was charged with first-degree murder, and a jury convicted him of the lesser offense of second- degree murder.
And
Witness C.L. testified that, at a teenage drinking party, "some kid" threatened [petitioner], and petitioner replied "I'm going to do you like I did that kid (the victim) up on Happy Valley." C.L. asked [petitioner] whether he actually killed the victim, and petitioner replied, "[J]ust you don't worry about it."Petitioner also showed C.L. a sawed-off shotgun in the back of his truck ..."
