and here is a snippet of a view of the mountains on this south side including Little Chief in front of you, Dusty Star (where two noted climbers lost their lives
this July) to its right (west).
Author Jack Holterman calls this the 'Grand March of Mountains' in his book Place Names of Glacier National Park, all of which rise to heights exceeding 8,000 feet. Those peaks include Red Eagle Mountain, Mahtotopa Mountain, Little Chief Mountain, Dusty Star Mountain and Citadel Mountain.
Little Chief Mountain is one of only a few Glacier mountains east of the Continental Divide that top out at over 9,500 feet in elevation. The steep east face is particularly impressive, as it towers nearly 5,000 feet above St. Mary Lake. One can also observe a prominent rock outcropping on the northeast ridge called The Gendarme from this point. The Gendarme is a technical rock climbing endeavor and Glacier's notoriously crumbly sedimentary rock must be taken into consideration for anyone attempting to climb this feature.
