I'm working with @Sun_Ray to develop an "All Trails Club" designation for MSC Stewards -- a program to encourage the 500+ stewards to know the trails better and explore the newer ones. Also hoping to influence some to track their progress here on HAZ.

So I typed up a list of all 133 miles of MSP trails and checked off the ones I've done, and I was shocked to find that I had not ever been on Old Jeep Trail. So I've made a list of the little bits and pieces of the Preserve that I haven't done to put on my 2015 resolution list.

In the boring spirit of checking things off a list - afterwards I parked at Anasazi Elementary (ok to do on the weekends) and took some of the access trails to get to the trailhead. Feels ridiculous to walk on a sidewalk basically to Via Linda on the "Lost Dog Wash Access Trail" but it's really a neighborhood access trail. I question whether this land is really in the Preserve and should be "counted" in the total mileage, but all the signs on the trail are from City of Scottsdale. To get a straight answer would take a dozen emails and not worth it.

Old Jeep Trail is pretty remote feeling but very, very rocky. A little unpleasant like Levee Trail. But nice to not see any houses. There's a peekaboo view of Camelback Mountain from the highest point on Old Jeep Trail.

Happy holidays to everyone!!! : rein : : rein : : rein : : rein :

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy steward only hike for those that had completed the 4 hour class on flora & fauna. 25 of us met at Lost Dog Wash trailhead and hiked a hybrid type hike that included parts of Ringtail and Lost Dog trails. Experienced master steward Lisa Miller lead the hike and discussion.

3 hours.

I spent the morning sitting next to @Sun_Ray at Scottsdale Community College listening to an amazing lecture from Len Marcisz (soon to be President of the AZ Historical Society) on "Human History in the McDowells" - 4 hours of intense and jam-packed history from ancient peoples to the founding of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Learned a lot - and one more reason I love being a steward - access to all the educational offerings. Although these lectures are open to the public - you just have to follow the calendar on the MSC website or subscribe to MSC emails.

After a nice nap, we got packed up to do a nice family hike. Parked at 128th St TH - took Ringtail Trail in a lasso loop to Lost Dog Wash trail and back. Pushed it a little through sunset - got some AWESOME pics with crazy gorgeous purple sky. Then back home for dinner to watch football and have a glass of bubbly.

A friend wanted to try to get back into hiking so figured this would be a good introductory hike. Nice weather. Clear air after the rain. Came back on the Old Jeep trail.

Went to go see the sunset with Sarah from the overlook. We caught the end of twilight only because we were delayed by a 12" desert tortoise that we needed to photograph and an aggressive, 24" diamondback who wouldn't leave the trail. I threw rocks really close to him, but he didn't budge. I hit him with a few thumb-sized rocks and he finally moved off. We saw four or five deer on the way back.

Found a Turtle on the Lost Dog Wash Trail.

Hadn't hiked with him in ages and we did something that'd be easy on the Turtle's knee.

Perfect weather. Lots out enjoying the day!

Thanks Denny...

I didn't plan on hiking today but Bruce is such a smooth talker. I was fasting for an afternoon blood removal so I needed something to take my mind off chips anyway :) . We meet at 7am and it was good to get out with an old friend. Nice weather and company. Thanks, bruce.

Easy, short, slow hike/walk as I strained a calf muscle on Sept 4th. This was my first outing since that date. Also walked the new interpretive trail near the Lost Dog TH. It's not signed yet and should officially open early next year.

For two hours before the hike I shadowed my McDowell Sonoran Conservancy mentor as a Pathfinder at the Lost Dog trailhead. Pathfinders are the folks in the blue shirts who hand out educational material, maps and help you select the hike that meets your needs. OH...and we also tell folks to push not pull on the doors to get into the restrooms. :D

Last hike of the Labor Day weekend - kids home with babysitter - date hike with husband. We haven't hike Lost Dog in such a long time. It's somewhat in the shade after 5:45pm this time of year. Went up to the lookout and then back to TH.

We had dinner at Pars (Persian food) and ate like it was our last meal.

Picked a local loop this morning to beat the heat and try out some new Oboz boots I picked up at REI on clearance on Tuesday. Temps were good, humidity was high, sun was low, and the mountain provided some shade. My hiking buddy Tricia joined me today and we had a blast! New boots worked great!! Very stiff soles, just what the Dr. ordered! Not much going on, on the trail this morning, just like most other morning hikes I go on in the valley.

OK Full Disclosure. I have recommended this hike to out of town friends, but I have never hiked it. They have consistently thanked me for the recommendation. So today I was going to head north to Prescott, but pumpkin happens. So about 1030 I figured, it's hot and this is not a hard hike - why don't I see what it is really like.

It is actually a very nice introductory hike to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I see why they like it. It is not spectacular. But it meanders, has a little bit of "roller coastering" through some arroyos without any really hard climbs and has a very nice pay off at the Taliesen overlook. The trail isn't "too rocky" so out-of-towners hiking this in tennis shoes won't be in too much hurt. When the temperature is cooler this could be a very pleasant stroll. Today with the high temps I had it all to myself so I saw numerous doves and gila woodpeckers snacking on Saguaro fruit. If out of towners ask me to hike this with them in season I will do it gladly. Wish I had brought my Pentax dSLR with my 300mm lens to zoom in on that house at Taliesen.

Some barrel cactus in bloom today.

It was such a lovely afternoon but I had to go to the dentist first. I had a feeling it would be bad news and it was even worse. So hiking was good therapy to try and not think about where I will be spending part of my summer :( and a good deal of my salary. This year sure hasn't been the best medically speaking for me. I know, "whine, whine, whine" - will someone get me some cheese to go with that  (not Julia). As my older cousin says, "It's hard to get old :stretch: !"

I didn't expect much from this hike; hadn't done it for quite some time. I ended up pulling out my camera phone; still not doing well with that but you know what they say... practice, practice, practice. The highlights were the beautiful yellow blooms of the palo verde accented by the purple and white of the most lovely ironwood trees capped off by the white and gold of the blooms a top the saguaros. Scattering about were birds and a few rabbits too with a smattering of hikers/bikers here and there.

Oh and the sky was great too but best of all is it felt like a fresh morning hike in the afternoon  . Since we didn't get the wildflower show this year, it's nice that the trees and saguaros are putting out. Tried the HAZ tracks but I forgot to turn off the bluetooth so I think that might have been part of my problem with recording the route plus my battery ran out.

Needless to say, I stopped more than I thot to try and take pics. The zoom kind of sucks though. I am looking at a new camera, Pany ZS40 that is a compact camera of my bigger Pany FZ150. It seems they'll never come out with the FZ250 (I passed on the 200 as I only like to buy new every few years). Anyway, since it's compact :), I can take it always as it will fit in my fanny pack.

I put it together along with the pics for a 5 1/2 minute video. However, when I let the youtube stabilizer do its work, I wasn't pleased but only because the Galaxy Nexus takes the narrower videos and doesn't fill the screen (plus no built in stabilizer like my Pany FZ150). So, I am going to put the Premier stabilizer on the video tonite to see if that makes a difference. I will supply the youtube link I prefer later.

Ironwood and Paloverde in later stages of bloom. Saguaros have their Easter Bonnets and are blooming.

Lee wanted to break in some new boots and I wanted to get out of the house for a couple of hours. Our original plan to go to Ben Avery for some fine-tuning will have to wait.

Glad I did this one at night. Might otherwise be the most boring terrain ever.

Took my visiting Kansas City friend, Fid, on his first hike in the desert. Talked so much I didn't pay much attention to the landscape. Did notice almost every hedgehog in purple/magenta bloom, a few Gambel's quail but scant wildflowers. Nice trail for beginning hikers. No views of "civilization" until you reach the Outlook (uh, Overlook) or happen to look up to the towers on Thompson Pk. More traffic than usual out here, split between bikers and hikers.
