Solo trip out to Taliesin after work. Ankle felt pretty good! Might have to take the bike out to this area.

Well, I finally found an expert Hike-Master to show me the way up the Sunrise Trail in the McDowell Mountains.
We started at the Lost Dog Wash TH and Madelyn guided me to the Sunrise Trail.

Prior to starting off, she briefed me on what to expect on the trail, and off we went. Soon Madelyn was looking back at me telling me to pick-up-the-pace as I kept falling behind. :) She eventually slowed her pace, so we could hike together.

Madelyn pointed out every plant that had needles on it and warned me to stay away. I did what the hike-master said and I prevented myself from getting ‘stuck’ by those pesky plants. She also demonstrated the correct way to throw a rock and hit a much larger rock. She never missed the larger rocks, but I struggled with a 50% ‘hit-rate’. Madelyn said I need alot more practice.

All in all it was a great hike, and Madelyn ranks as the cutest hike-master in Arizona. 8)

Did a circumnavigation of McDowell Preserve. Add Promenade Trail and Sonoran Trail in Fountain Hills. Cold and windy on top of East End Summit. Got sprinkled on a little on the Dixie Mine trail. The tailing pile from Dixie Mine is huge! That must be some hole, too bad its gated. Had to cut through some gated 'hoods to complete the hike.

I should call this hike …… ’Try Out Some New Boots (and other hike equipment) - MSP’

I started at 124th St, Lost Dog Wash TH and hiked up its namesake, followed by part of the Quartz Trail. Even though today is a holiday (MLK Day), the trails were empty. This out-and-back stroll was just what I needed to try out the new boots and other equipment, including a new protective case for the GPS.
All worked well, so now I’m good-to-go for more adventurous places.

It was also a nice ‘change-of-pace’.
Just a leisurely stroll, with no maps, with no trail finding, no off-trail wandering, no scratched-up arms, no benchmarks to find (or data-sheets to bring), and no long drive. :)

I got a late start on this hike where my primary purpose was to test out my knee which I had injured on a Christmas day hike. I pushed off at 11:25 and headed out to the Taliesin Overlook, overlooked the Taliesin, and came back on the Old Jeep Road Trail. I took that to the Ringtail Trail which then circled south and back west to the parking lot. It was a pretty nice day. The temperature was in the low 60's and I finished the 5.8 mile loop in an hour and 55 minutes with 525 feet of AEF.

Mellow evening hike with Hippy, Rachel and Frank. We started from the 128th St Trailhead and made a counter clockwise loop. We stopped briefly at Taliesin Overlook and then finished off the loop. It was a nice evening out on the trails.

Great night hike with Sarah, Byron, and MeiMei. Byron and I thought we were all doing the Lost Dog-Old Jeep-Ringtail Loop, but Sarah and MeiMei had other plans. We hiked ahead of them onto Old Jeep and found a big scorpion. After some minutes passed as we paparazzied the scorpion, Byron and I noticed that the girls weren't behind us--they had zagged while we had zigged and were on the way to the Taliesin Overlook. We caught up with them and all was good.

Introduced MJ to the Lost Dog looking for a somewhat gentle trail that would not aggravate her knee injury. I was last out here on March 5, too early for full-blown wildflower season. And today I'm back out here way too late. Wildflowers of course are gone but the red-spined compass barrel was sporting yellow flowers still. And the saguaros were sprouting, ready to flower soon. MJ did not like the flies and I did not like the wind. But the wind got rid of the flies so we compromised and did not pray to the gods of nature for more of one than the other. Walked out to Taliesen Overlook, and returned to the parking lot just before sunset. Passed 7 others, mostly bikers, a few hikers and one jogger.

meant to get out right after work this morning, but due to feeling a little run down and forgetting to pack my hiking shoes, i opted for a nap
decided on this mellow loop for an afternoon hike instead
lost dog to taliesin overlook, then took the jeep trail to ringtail to anazasi spur
hadn't been on this part of ringtail before, and frankly it wasn't that exciting
saw two brown lizards and a roadrunner
ocotillos are blooming
although i had bigger plans today, this hike was what i needed
nice and warm, good breeze
saw maybe 15 people out mid afternoon

Saw oodles of wildflowers during a late afternoon traverse of this easy 2.13 mile trail to the Overlook. Ran into several fields of Mexican poppies. Less showy blue dicks dominated at the sides of the trail the farther I went. Fiddlenecks and lupine also abound, and found phacelia in a few small clusters. Brittlebush buds are near bursting point. This is such a beautiful area this time of year you have to wonder why so few on the trail. Not complaining. I like my solitude. If you want to see all the desert plants, Lost Dog may be one of the better hikes. Plenty of saguaro, creosote, ocotillo, bersag and palo verde not to mention forests of teddy-bear cholla. I didn't stick around for sunset at the Overlook but it must've been spectacular because it was spectacular in the valley along the Wash. Some clouds, great day for photography.

Once you make the second crossing of the Wash and enter into the valley, the rewards of January's rainfall become clear.

This was a nice little out-and-back stroll on a "close-to-town" trail.
It's one of only a few trails I hadn't been on in Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve. We started at Lost Dog Wash TH at 124th St and proceeded to the Quartz trail.

Ironically, the Quartz trail moves out of McDowell Sonoran Preserve land and proceeds onto Arizona State Trust Land. (The Trust Land sign is still there, but it's been uprooted and placed off the trail a bit). We have permits, so we continued up the trail, which stays in a wide wash.
Due to time constraints of my hiking mate, we turned around at the location of some well-placed and majestic looking cairns in the wash. It appeared the cairns were indicating an off-trail route, as the official Quartz trail continues up the wash.

We also hiked up a steep trail spur to a quartz outcropping. That white quartz is in definite color contrast to the normal colors we expect in our Arizona rocks.

We saw some mule deer on our hike back that appeared to be a family of four. They stared at us & we stared at them. Photos are poor due to zoom & distance, but it was good to see healthy deer in the Preserve.

With Judy and the boys, Java and Kai. Jude needed to be in the area to meet granddaughter at the bus stop so we picked a hike near by. Parked at Lost Dog trail head and followed the signs to the overlook and back. Nice easy hike and today very few people out.

Well, I didn't think I'd have time for any more hikes this year, but I got a good day's rest on Sunday and was feeling spry after work Monday morning. I was going into Scottsdale anyway and decided to do a quick out and back in the McDowells. Trails were pretty quiet on Christmas Eve morning.

Haven't done much hiking in this part of the McDowells, just Sunrise Peak. Stopped by the Taliesin Overlook and the quartz outcropping along the way. Climbed up the waterfall at the end of the trail and kept going for a while. Took the Old Jeep trail and Ringtail on the way back for a partial loop.
