Went on a bird walk with 2 bird expert stewards. On our last walk, I thought I spotted owls in one of the Saguaro holes. Walter brought his scope and carried it for the entire walk. Sad to report that there were no owls in that hole. Felt very guilty that I made him carry heavy equipment. But he was happy as we saw 26 sps. I really enjoy listening to people with knowledge and experience.

Ringtail, bisected by Sunrise up to the intersection with Andrew-Kinsey trail, running short on time so didn't go all the way to peak.

1st trip
needed a double digit training hike with some aeg, not on south mountain
started from lost dog trailhead, went up to sunrise peak, down to 145th street and back
then took ringtail to the jeep trail, and lost dog to taliesen overlook
lost dog back to the trailhead
didn't know if anyone had a track for the new nature trail, so i finished with that - it's cute
saw maybe 15 hikers and three mountain bikers - no one on the west side of sunrise, old jeep or ringtail
83 degrees when i started, 91 at the finish and quite humid
cloud cover for most of sunrise and a good breeze all morning
always enjoy sunrise peak and the east side views

This is a good workout loop. By taking the western segment of Sunrise Trail where it intersects Ringtail Trail, you shorten the loop by about 3/4 mile, but it's still a great time out and about.

Wanted a short hike after dropping kids off at school. Flowers way past peak. Just wasn't in the mood - turned back as I started to climb up Sunrise.

had planned to hike Gateway with Kathy on Monday but I'm a "buttercup" and wanted to rest my knee a day. With the temps so nice though, I must get out so I decided a nice 4 mile hike after work would do the trick. And I was hoping for lots of blooming brittle bush. I don't think I've hiked this particular lasso cclockwise so thought I would do that today:
Lost Dog Trail Access to Lost Dog to Ringtail to Old Jeep to Lost Dog.

Lots of elderly people out and about. A few bike riders, a couple horseback riders (I think one of the horses was new to the city trail as he kept a good eye on me when I was behind; I tried to stay in his peripheral vision cuz I could see he was having issues) and a few other hikers were out as well. There was brittlebush blooming finally as I came up the south side of the Ringtail trail and some more for the rest of the way except not as much on Lost Dog. There were a few hedgehogs blooming and lots of creosote and some chuparosa.

The trail is in good shape altho there were two areas on a couple of the hills that it looks like they had to fill in some rock. But how nice was it to hike on a real trail after two weekends of cross country? VERY nice.

PS I did stop for short moments to take pics with Kemosabe and a couple times had to reset Route Manager.

Wanted to get a hike involving the Ringtail Trail so that I could cross it off my get er' done list. Got to the Lost Dog Trail head at around 6:30. I guess the park ranger gets there around 7, because the gates were closed :( . So I drove over to the 128th St. Trail head. That trail head has been modestly upgraded since I was last there. Ironically, it is now called Ringtail trail head, it has a map of the nearby trails and a permanent trash receptacle. There is enough parking there for about 12 vehicles. I did the trail going counter clockwise. It was a very gradual climb to the Sunrise Trail and then it dips down to a major wash. It was kind of rocky during the climbing part, but there after fairly nice for jogging. After the wash there was a split in the trail, with the Ringtail going left to a ridge and an overlook and the right trail becoming the Old Jeep Trail. Stopped briefly at the overlook and noticed what looked to be a short trail going off to the east from where the Ringtail crossed the wash. From the overlook everything else was downhill. Jogged to the Lost Dog trail head and then a short ways past the parking lot to connect to the Anazasi Spur trail. I took that for a short ways to where it connected to the Ringtail. Nice little loop. I think this was the first time I've done the whole Ringtail in one hike. Encountered 25 hikers along the Lost Dog Wash Trail as I was heading toward the trail head. Looked like it was going to be a busy day on the trails. Glad I beat the crowds.

Attended biomimicry hike today. Got there early and did kovach trail first. Day is windy but beautiful. The parking lot and beginning are of the trail is always windy to me like venturi effect.
This is my second hike as an assistant to assist the leader. Now I have graduated to be an assistant on any of the hikes. :D
There is a FB page for MSP stewards. I post my patrol hikes there with a few photos. Today I was approached by the team lead for patrol. She wanted to know if i take the pictures my self or if i copy and paste from internet :o She likes my photos but wanted the credit to go to the original photographer....lol  . I do take photos myself for anyone out there that has that question. I can honestly say, no one has ever asked me that question before :)

My usual trip to Tucson was filled with nice periodic rain, so I kept heading north until I could get a break in the storm for a hike. I ended up doing Sunrise from 128th street, and the weather was great. Got to the trailhead a bit before 5 and started off. I saw 4 hikers early on, and then nobody after the first 15 minutes or so. I got on and off sprinkles for most of the hike, but never enough to need my rain jacket. Took a nice break on top to enjoy the views and then headed back down. I decided to check out the 136th street spur instead of heading back the way I came, this trail was probably my favorite on this mountain. Very faint trail with some nice bouldering spots, I will have to make this my next ascent. Light was failing and I scrambled up onto the neighborhood street and took Larkspur back to where the van was parked. Some mighty expensive houses up here...

finally on the last legs of being sick, had to get out after work, looking for wildflowers.
People count 5, lizards 3, bike rider 1, squirrel 1, silly wabbit 1, bitty garter snake 1, wildflower 1 if you don't count brittlebush.
Disappointing, so it became just a hike; but I did take a bit of video; okay a lot (didn't start narrating until Old Jeep). It was somewhat warm and the sun was in and out amongst the flat broken layer of clouds. The brittlebush added some liveliness to the hike up to the Taliesin Overlook. I took Scout II along for the ride too ](*,) but I don't think there's much point in doing that anymore for established trails and no side excursions. (Thank you Garmin Oregon 450; I love wasting my time and money.)

At the Overlook, even though your view is of the city, it is still rather striking to have it all laying out there right in front of you. I checked my heart rate after walking around a bit and was not happy that it was still high. Oh well. Hopefully that will change soon! I moved Scout II back in my backpack and headed off to the Old Jeep Trail. I like this part of the hike as you go up and down a couple drainages. At the one big drainage/wash you can definitely see the road/trail has been effected by our winter rain.

The temps started to cool now as I came up the Ringtail Trail to top out above the area. This is a pretty part too I think. It's still quite green even if the brittlebush blooms are starting to fade. Before completing the hike I went around one of the two small loops of the Interpretive Trail that I believe is being dedicated at the end of the month. The signs are scheduled to go in this winter.

Great weather for a hike, and the lot was popular too. I ended up running most of it, especially the last section. Went toward the Summit Trail first, then Old Jeep, to Taliesin Overlook. I came back on Lost Dog to RIngtail Trail and then back down via the Summit Trail back. Great exercise, although I tried new insoles and my feet got 3 or 4 blisters.

I forgot how scenic this section of MSP is….

My daughter had a play date and dropped her off at her friend's house around 10am. Lost dog TH is close by so decided to go there. I did it a couple of year's ago and somehow managed not to enter triplog :o . It was very windy throughout the hike. Steady flow of hikers and some bikers made it feel like I was not alone. Not much wildlife to speak of. I photographed a new bird for me but it came out too blurry.
Saw a artificial saguaro cactus at Ringtail TH. I see those in north Scottsdale too. Anyone know what their purpose is?

I feel like such the "merry housewife" right now as I type this triplog. Woke up this morning and cleaned up the Christmas mess of the house and organized the kids' Santa haul. Then took kids to winter break school so I could get a hike in before we leave for family trip tomorrow.

I'm in the "check it off the list" mode for All trails challenge. There's a REASON I haven't done some of these last few trails on the list. I was determined to get 136th Street to Sunrise knocked off after going up to Sunrise Peak dozens of times by way of 124th, 128th, and 145th.

Unfortunately the 136th Street spur Trailhead just recently  CLOSED  for the next 10-12 months for construction update. So I parked at Ringtail TH on 128th Street and took Ringtail :next: Sunrise Trail then went down 136th Street spur.

I was all into the trail at first and then I entered a wash area with all kinds of warning signs about rocks/boulders. No more trail - just sandy wash alternating with climbing down easy rocky boulder areas - but with huge mansions on either side up above me - felt creepy for some reason.

Went through two tunnels (bridges above part of fancy pants neighborhood) and then got to the blocked off construction site trailhead. I was dreading going back up those stupid rocks. They're not difficult - but it's just not what I had in mind today. I like steep trails but I like switchbacks and trails. I like the clicking and crunching under my feet in a rhythm. Plus I'm 41 years old - my knees don't love sliding and climbing rocks. And getting on an airplane tomorrow - I didn't want to twist my ankle the day before.

So I did something kind of crazy for me - and popped out on 136th Street and just jogged back to my car on 128th St. I looked ridiculous jogging with a backpack on. But I was so glad when I got back to my car!!

Then came home - took a long nap with my cat - got 3 loads of laundry done - dishes - packing suitcases for kids and me - and watching two chick flicks on TV (Little Women and Julie/Julia cooking movie).

Now got to go pick up the kids - no way I could get all this done with them in the house. Have you ever heard the sentiment that trying to clean your house with kids in it is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos??? :sl:

I'm working with @Sun_Ray to develop an "All Trails Club" designation for MSC Stewards -- a program to encourage the 500+ stewards to know the trails better and explore the newer ones. Also hoping to influence some to track their progress here on HAZ.

So I typed up a list of all 133 miles of MSP trails and checked off the ones I've done, and I was shocked to find that I had not ever been on Old Jeep Trail. So I've made a list of the little bits and pieces of the Preserve that I haven't done to put on my 2015 resolution list.

In the boring spirit of checking things off a list - afterwards I parked at Anasazi Elementary (ok to do on the weekends) and took some of the access trails to get to the trailhead. Feels ridiculous to walk on a sidewalk basically to Via Linda on the "Lost Dog Wash Access Trail" but it's really a neighborhood access trail. I question whether this land is really in the Preserve and should be "counted" in the total mileage, but all the signs on the trail are from City of Scottsdale. To get a straight answer would take a dozen emails and not worth it.

Old Jeep Trail is pretty remote feeling but very, very rocky. A little unpleasant like Levee Trail. But nice to not see any houses. There's a peekaboo view of Camelback Mountain from the highest point on Old Jeep Trail.

Happy holidays to everyone!!! : rein : : rein : : rein : : rein :
