Working on project with McDowell Sonoran Concervancy ground dwelling orthropod project. Set 40 'drop trap' cups...solo cups set in ground to ground level. Bugs fall into cup and can't get out. A group of us will return Monday (72 hours later) to collect. Conservancy is assisting with this ASU science project.

Wanted a good exercise hike and didn't want to drive to Tom's Thumb north.
Only takes 15 minutes to 128th St TH even in school traffic. Had a little bit of a sore throat but pressed on - - maybe wasn't so smart - - felt like crap later that night and the rest of the weekend. But at least I got a good workout in.

I took Ringtail to Sunrise trail up to the intersection with new Andrews-Kinsey trail. Then back down.

McDowell Sonoran Conservancy steward only hike for those that had completed the 4 hour class on flora & fauna. 25 of us met at Lost Dog Wash trailhead and hiked a hybrid type hike that included parts of Ringtail and Lost Dog trails. Experienced master steward Lisa Miller lead the hike and discussion.

3 hours.

I spent the morning sitting next to @Sun_Ray at Scottsdale Community College listening to an amazing lecture from Len Marcisz (soon to be President of the AZ Historical Society) on "Human History in the McDowells" - 4 hours of intense and jam-packed history from ancient peoples to the founding of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Learned a lot - and one more reason I love being a steward - access to all the educational offerings. Although these lectures are open to the public - you just have to follow the calendar on the MSC website or subscribe to MSC emails.

After a nice nap, we got packed up to do a nice family hike. Parked at 128th St TH - took Ringtail Trail in a lasso loop to Lost Dog Wash trail and back. Pushed it a little through sunset - got some AWESOME pics with crazy gorgeous purple sky. Then back home for dinner to watch football and have a glass of bubbly.

Took Friday off work and went for a few hikes.

#1 Up Sunrise Peak in the McDowells. I’d been here before, off trail 20+ years ago as I was piecing together Annerino’s McDowell Ridgeline as a series off day hikes
Nice trails now, saw about 20 people - time to get further out of town :)

#2 Adams Mesa - had not done this one - nice views. A few dirt bikes and gunshots in the distance - not bad though. I saw a tortoise and a coyote :D

#3 Stewart Mountain - another first. Signed the register, no sign ins since all the HAZers on 1/1/14 : app :

#4 Coon Bluff - an easy little summit overlooking the Salt river.

This was an experiment. Wednesday mornings are my Fridays and I've been toying with the idea of a weekly after work hike. I came up to the McDowells to see if they would make a good hangout spot. Unfortunately rush hour traffic and heavy construction on the 101 means I'll have to look elsewhere on Wednesday mornings.

This was a training hike to learn about how to assist and lead a MSC wellness or nature hike in the preserve.

Return to the trail? Hopefully, yes. Started at the Ringtail Trailhead and transitioned to Old Jeep Trail for a bit. First "training hike" for the Secret Canyon camping trip next weekend. D'oh! I'm pretty sure I left my 3 D Cell LED Maglite at the Ringtail Trailhead :( .

Found a Turtle on the Lost Dog Wash Trail.

Hadn't hiked with him in ages and we did something that'd be easy on the Turtle's knee.

Perfect weather. Lots out enjoying the day!

Thanks Denny...

I didn't plan on hiking today but Bruce is such a smooth talker. I was fasting for an afternoon blood removal so I needed something to take my mind off chips anyway :) . We meet at 7am and it was good to get out with an old friend. Nice weather and company. Thanks, bruce.

Picked a local loop this morning to beat the heat and try out some new Oboz boots I picked up at REI on clearance on Tuesday. Temps were good, humidity was high, sun was low, and the mountain provided some shade. My hiking buddy Tricia joined me today and we had a blast! New boots worked great!! Very stiff soles, just what the Dr. ordered! Not much going on, on the trail this morning, just like most other morning hikes I go on in the valley.

Lee wanted to break in some new boots and I wanted to get out of the house for a couple of hours. Our original plan to go to Ben Avery for some fine-tuning will have to wait.

Glad I did this one at night. Might otherwise be the most boring terrain ever.

yesterday mt98dew mentioned the mapped area feature
looked at the 15 phoenix/valley peaks and saw that i was missing this one
not much different than starting from 124th street
felt like a slacker not doing the over and back ;)
saw maybe a dozen people out
very nice morning
still quite a bit of dust in the air
split the difference between tibber's official track and the description stats

Did a circumnavigation of McDowell Preserve. Add Promenade Trail and Sonoran Trail in Fountain Hills. Cold and windy on top of East End Summit. Got sprinkled on a little on the Dixie Mine trail. The tailing pile from Dixie Mine is huge! That must be some hole, too bad its gated. Had to cut through some gated 'hoods to complete the hike.

Did Sunrise Peak from 145th street trail head to the Ringtail Trail to 128th Street trail head. Followed Via Linda back to 145th street trail head.

Great 360 degree views from the peak. Surprisingly easy 1200 ft ascent to the top. Nice trail down to Lost Dog / Ringtail. Hike back on Via Linda could have been worse, but was worth it to make a loop.

meant to get out right after work this morning, but due to feeling a little run down and forgetting to pack my hiking shoes, i opted for a nap
decided on this mellow loop for an afternoon hike instead
lost dog to taliesin overlook, then took the jeep trail to ringtail to anazasi spur
hadn't been on this part of ringtail before, and frankly it wasn't that exciting
saw two brown lizards and a roadrunner
ocotillos are blooming
although i had bigger plans today, this hike was what i needed
nice and warm, good breeze
saw maybe 15 people out mid afternoon
