Lee wanted to break in some new boots and I wanted to get out of the house for a couple of hours. Our original plan to go to Ben Avery for some fine-tuning will have to wait.

Glad I did this one at night. Might otherwise be the most boring terrain ever.

yesterday mt98dew mentioned the mapped area feature
looked at the 15 phoenix/valley peaks and saw that i was missing this one
not much different than starting from 124th street
felt like a slacker not doing the over and back ;)
saw maybe a dozen people out
very nice morning
still quite a bit of dust in the air
split the difference between tibber's official track and the description stats

Did a circumnavigation of McDowell Preserve. Add Promenade Trail and Sonoran Trail in Fountain Hills. Cold and windy on top of East End Summit. Got sprinkled on a little on the Dixie Mine trail. The tailing pile from Dixie Mine is huge! That must be some hole, too bad its gated. Had to cut through some gated 'hoods to complete the hike.

Did Sunrise Peak from 145th street trail head to the Ringtail Trail to 128th Street trail head. Followed Via Linda back to 145th street trail head.

Great 360 degree views from the peak. Surprisingly easy 1200 ft ascent to the top. Nice trail down to Lost Dog / Ringtail. Hike back on Via Linda could have been worse, but was worth it to make a loop.

meant to get out right after work this morning, but due to feeling a little run down and forgetting to pack my hiking shoes, i opted for a nap
decided on this mellow loop for an afternoon hike instead
lost dog to taliesin overlook, then took the jeep trail to ringtail to anazasi spur
hadn't been on this part of ringtail before, and frankly it wasn't that exciting
saw two brown lizards and a roadrunner
ocotillos are blooming
although i had bigger plans today, this hike was what i needed
nice and warm, good breeze
saw maybe 15 people out mid afternoon

This was the perfect low key, flat, relaxing stroll I was looking for to fit with my fiancee's needs, who had limited time that day and didn't want a challenging hike. The trail features expansive views of the mountains, and goes through a particularly lush area of cholla cactus growth (no dangers, the trail is very well-developed). The route is well-marked with signage, in addition to which you are almost always within view of a neighboring residential neighborhood and school.

We had the goal in mind to do the full length of the McDowell's and decided on south to north. So we started at the Sunrise TH and with a fast trail we made good time up and over Sunset Peak and down to the Ringtail Trail. From there we took the Old Jeep Trail through the Lost Dog area which was nicer than we thought it would be. The trail traverses along several wash crossings and each one had some poppies....the flowers are starting to come out :) We continued over to the Lost Dog Trail where it ends at the beginning of the Quartz Trail.

We took the Quartz Trail over to Paradise Trail and eventually to Bell Pass Trail. The Quartz and Paradise Trail are not the most exciting as it meanders through the housing development even though it's still on desert trail. Fortunately the section is short and makes its way back into the main part of the preserve. We continued on the Paradise Trail over to Bell Pass Trail and then up to Bell Pass....more poppies on this section. It was on the Bell Pass Trail steep sections that we were reminded summer is coming

From Bell Pass it was down to the Windmill junction and then up East End Trail to the Tom's Thumb Trail. As usual the Tom's Thumb area is awesome and probably the best part of the McDowell's. After a short break on top we headed down to the Tom's Thumb TH to the vehicle we left earlier that morning.

Haven't done much hiking in this part of the McDowells, just Sunrise Peak. Stopped by the Taliesin Overlook and the quartz outcropping along the way. Climbed up the waterfall at the end of the trail and kept going for a while. Took the Old Jeep trail and Ringtail on the way back for a partial loop.

on the way back up toward the overlook, i startled 10-12 deer
after bolting, they stood on the hillside staring at me

Just when you think you've seen it all... there was a young couple riding Segways on the trails. Can someone explain this to me??

From there I ran the Ringtail trail to Sunrise Peak, down Sunrise trail and back to the Lost Dog trailhead on the Via Linda spur trail.

My hike of this trail is accounted for in my triplog called "Lost Dog Ringtail Sunrise Anazasi Loop, AZ" of April 18, 2012. This triplog has been made solely for the purpose of documenting my progress in experiencing the trails shown in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Mapped Area .

Once again, a hike  instead of a spin/strength class at the Club. Those can wait for hotter days. After work (3PM) I drove to Lost Dog TH with the intent of doing a route I hadn't done in a few years (Lost Dog, Old Jeep, Ringtail, Lost Dog). However, when I got to the junction with Ringtail, I decided to change my route and do it the opposite way. And then when I got to the junction with Old Jeep or Ringtail to Sunrise Peak, I eyed the Peak and thot:
since the temperature is so cool I should go for the harder traverse and head over to Sunrise Peak.
this would be a good warm-up for the Black Top Mesa hike I am doing this weekend.
and I avoided a part of the rocky trail from the Lost Dog TH to Sunrise Trail.

I consulted the map to determine mileage since it was 3:45PM and figured I could be to Sunrise Peak in time to see the fountain :) . So off I went enjoying the Ringtail trail which took me further west than I thot before joining up with the junction at 128th St and Sunrise Trail. So far, in that mile and 1/2, I was the only person on the trail but I did see two rabbits. I would see few people today.

As I headed up, I saw two hikers stopped alongside the trail, a biker and a hiker coming down toward the top before the first saddle, and two other hikers coming down as I got toward the second saddle. Lately on this trail, I have been so surprised at how alone I am on a city trail. I did see a little garter snake laying across the trail but as soon as he saw me get my camera out, he skidaddled. I was the only one at the Peak (that 1/4 mile-a little more than 250 feet straight up  is a doozy too) where I stopped and rested for a few minutes as I got there 10 minutes early. I took some zoom photos but it was quite a hazy day.

It was a bit chilly (mostly due to the breezy conditions) so I headed back down and tried to keep up a pretty good pace after a wardrobe adjustment. The most disappointing thing is my feet kept bumping into the trail and I was stumbling a lot :o . I have never done that before; it was very frustrating ](*,) . I tried to really pick up my right foot as it seemed to be the most out of control but then soon my left foot joined in this silly game. So I concentrated on the old heel-toe method of hiking and pretty much stayed level for the last mile and 1/2.

I did take a minor detour in one of the washes as what looked like a cave got my attention. The water has done quite a job of erosion at the area I investigated but it wasn't a cave. You'll have to see the photo to appreciate the bank that has now been created.

It was so chilly on the way back that my nose was even running and I had to turn the heat on in Tonto to get warm. I did get to see that big old ball of fire set below the horizon though so that was kind of cool.

Oh, I almost forgot. We have a new resident at our office complex and since I had my camera, I took a video of the owl: http://youtu.be/b8qTLkvEDtc
