Attended biomimicry hike today. Got there early and did kovach trail first. Day is windy but beautiful. The parking lot and beginning are of the trail is always windy to me like venturi effect.
This is my second hike as an assistant to assist the leader. Now I have graduated to be an assistant on any of the hikes. :D
There is a FB page for MSP stewards. I post my patrol hikes there with a few photos. Today I was approached by the team lead for patrol. She wanted to know if i take the pictures my self or if i copy and paste from internet :o She likes my photos but wanted the credit to go to the original photographer....lol  . I do take photos myself for anyone out there that has that question. I can honestly say, no one has ever asked me that question before :)

Another fantastic Thanksgiving Day hike with a fun group of Turkeys. This was the 5th annual for the group and my 4th.

Lil Turtle was absent due to now being hitched. I figure give it a year or two and he should be back in the fold.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the great people here on HikeArizona.

LiLD was out of town so It was just LP,Gecko,JJ and I for our Thanksgiving hike. Maybe he can make it next year. Temps were not bad once we got moving. We kept a pretty good pace this year and I think I burned a few calories. Probably not enough for today's intake though :o . Great workout, weather and company. Always great to hike with you guys. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all the Hazers! :y:

I’ve been meaning to hike the new connector trail between the Scottsdale trail system and the Fountain Hills preserve since I saw about a year ago that it was completed. The weather for this day was perfect. I started from the Sunrise TH, hiked out to the end of the Andrews-Kinsey Trail, and turned back.
The hike up Sunrise is the most of the elevation gain on this hike. Just a bit past the second junction for the spur trail to Sunrise Peak is the junction for the Andrews-Kinsey. Andrews-Kinsey is level for the most part, with a few up and down sections, but nothing extreme.

This trail had a lot of nice views and was nicer than I expected. At the junction with the Sunrise Trail you can see all of metro Phoenix all the way out to the west side, and along the trail views to the east are very good, the typical Four Peaks, Supes, etc. The trail takes a horseshoe shape along the top of Adero Canyon, which is the new development in Fountain Hills that’s now getting started. Along the Canyon bottom, the grading work has started and is very visible, along with a road grader currently sitting idle. The good part of this is that an agreement has finally been hashed out with MCO Properties that will allow for a new trailhead at the entrance and will connect to the Fountain Hills Preserve trails much easier. I’ve seen that in plan reviews as part of my job, so it’s on the way and getting built.

When I got up there, the wind was really strong. I welcomed this very much. Seems like just the other day I was hiking locally in the 110+ temps, slogging that out, so it was nice to hike in much cooler and more comfortable weather. The skies were nice and clear, giving a lot of nice views across the valley and to the east. Andrews-Kinsey has much less foot traffic than Sunrise. I only saw 2 bikers at the junction of A-K and Sunrise on my way back, but the tire tracks are all over both trails. Had a few conversations with some other former Pittsburghers as typically happens in my Steeler gear. Finished shortly after 11am and got some Senor Taco for lunch in Fountain Hills before heading home.

Looking forward next weekend to hiking up in the Seattle area.

Carolyn was in town visiting so Mark, Mercy, Dennis and myself joined her for a quick trip up to Sunrise Peak at 7:15 am. It was a windy day with a nice temperature of 75 degrees but we were up too late the night before. We just hiked up to the first ridge and decided to go to OHSOs for brunch. Just 4 miles in 90 minutes with 825 feet of AEG.

My usual trip to Tucson was filled with nice periodic rain, so I kept heading north until I could get a break in the storm for a hike. I ended up doing Sunrise from 128th street, and the weather was great. Got to the trailhead a bit before 5 and started off. I saw 4 hikers early on, and then nobody after the first 15 minutes or so. I got on and off sprinkles for most of the hike, but never enough to need my rain jacket. Took a nice break on top to enjoy the views and then headed back down. I decided to check out the 136th street spur instead of heading back the way I came, this trail was probably my favorite on this mountain. Very faint trail with some nice bouldering spots, I will have to make this my next ascent. Light was failing and I scrambled up onto the neighborhood street and took Larkspur back to where the van was parked. Some mighty expensive houses up here...

Got my butt out of bed and was at trailhead just after 6am. This loop has been on my to do list for a while. I used Sunrise Peak 136th to 145th Loop GPS Route by @BiFrost, but I started at 145th St and went counter clockwise down to 136th St.

I really enjoyed the top end of the 136th St Spur, coming down through the canyon with all the boulders, although it was slow going with many big drops in the canyon wash. It actually felt cool in there. Many spots you would never guess there were big homes right above the canyon wall if you did not know better. However I never got onto 136th St - where BiFrost's route shows an exit from wash, there was new construction blocking the path completely (pic at photoset). So I just continued down the wash to E Via Linda Rd. I wonder if soon the Spur will be closed to hikers because eventually there will be no entry/exit.

The last mile on Via Linda back to the 145th trailhead was worst part of my hike because it was getting hot and humid, not nice on sidewalk. But other then that I enjoyed this loop. Next time I would do it clockwise up the canyon per BiFrost's route, that would be easier rather then picking way down through some of the boulder drops.

Lesson learned: it's officially summer. Can't start a hike at 8:30am anymore. Was a little breezy thank goodness. Gnats were everywhere. Good workout but couldn't really relax at the top b/c of the bugs.

Great morning hike with Rob.

Started from the parking lot around 8:20 a.m. Many thanks to Rob for helping me up the mountain. He didn't carry or push me, but he allowed me to find my way up at a pace that worked for me.

We saw a number of flowering Mammillaria Zeilmanniana and one with a full crown. No animals other than dogs.

Started off from the Dog Wash side. Went end to end without peaking, then on the return trip hit the peak. Jogged most of it, except for the return trip of the east side and the peak part. Rough trail to jog. Very rocky on the west side, and though not steep, constantly climbing. Traffic was easily 3x heavier on the east side. No wildlife to speak of. Though I had my head down for most of it.

Great morning hike with Rob.

The morning was cool and the trail was surprisingly unbusy. We only made it a bit past the junction with 136th Street Spur Trail, but that was because of me.

As we made our way down, we saw the beginnings of the "ant trail" that I'm sure will thicken throughout the course of the day.

Interesting loop...first time on 136th St Spur trail which was really just walking up the wash below the houses. Also, 136th St TH is currently closed for some kind renovation/construction so we had to start from the 145th St equestrian lot and hike to 136th before going up the wash. Then over to Sunrise Peak where we had happy hour sunset before heading down to 145th St.

At the intersection of the Sunrise Trail and the 136th Street Spur Trail there are "warning" signs about the Spur Trail. I scoffed at them, each time I passed by. I was wrong, the 136th Spur is doable, but definitely not your typical McDowell Mountain Super Trail.

wanted some elevation, but also to hike the andrews - kinsey trail
started from 145th street trailhead since i've never actually parked there, and sunrise trail from that side is shorter, steeper and far more scenic than from the west
up to the peak, then ten feet past the horse railing, took a right on andrews - kinsey
very nice trail cut into the side of the mountain, following the contours and going around two big drainages
good footing so one can look around at the superstitions, weaver's needle, four peaks, and the fountain hills fountain
lots of vegetation and a decent flower show, with brittlebush, globemallow, hedgehog blossoms, and some little yellow ones
the only thing i didn't much care for was the arbitrary end of the trail at the fountain hills preserve boundary
a trail continued, and without time constraints i would have gone farther
as it was, i had hiked the entire trail and went about 50 feet further to a nice overlook
went back the same way without sunrise peak
i don't mind an out-and-back, but next time i would look at some loop options on satellite view
fun to do something new, along with a peak and a good workout
started around 9:30 and finished just after noon
saw quite a few people going up to and on sunrise, no one on andrews - kinsey, and maybe four on the way back down

I employed two expert hike masters to lead me up Sunrise Peak.

Madelyn (age nine) and Adam (eight) had us start at the 124th St, Lost Dog Wash TH, and soon we transitioned to the Sunrise Trail to eventually go up atop the peak.

Prior to leaving the trailhead, I was given a thorough briefing on what to expect.
The briefing included map reading, understanding signage, and the avoidance of stepping in scat.
I was also informed that I would carry all the water for all three of us, plus all food, sun tan lotion, cameras, a GPS, and a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). The PLB was needed in case I got lost or fell into a huge pit of scat. Thank-goodness neither happened.
Oh - They also said there would be absolutely no “looking-for-benchmarks” on this journey.
I agreed to all terms.

Madelyn and Adam (the hike-master duo), took turns leading the charge up the Sunrise Trail.
We stopped to check out cactus, mountains, flowers and an assortment of lizards.
Once on the peak, we had a snack and waited for the Fountain Hills fountain to rise from the lake.
Photo-ops were in order for the rising fountain.

We made good time - over 2.5 mph. Not bad for over 6 miles and about 1,600 AEG. (We took a few treks off trail).
Being eight and nine years old, the two hike masters didn’t even breath hard on this hike. They were too busy having a great time. I was the slow-poke of the group.

They both agreed to clear me for ‘solo-hiking’, especially since I avoided falling into any ‘pits-of-scat’.
