yesterday mt98dew mentioned the mapped area feature
looked at the 15 phoenix/valley peaks and saw that i was missing this one
not much different than starting from 124th street
felt like a slacker not doing the over and back ;)
saw maybe a dozen people out
very nice morning
still quite a bit of dust in the air
split the difference between tibber's official track and the description stats

Hike for exercise. Hacking cough limited me some. Parking lot completely full and overflow lot mostly full. Most crowded that I have ever seen it. Not much going on with wildflowers. Ocotillo on lower section were explosive orange.

Well, I finally found an expert Hike-Master to show me the way up the Sunrise Trail in the McDowell Mountains.
We started at the Lost Dog Wash TH and Madelyn guided me to the Sunrise Trail.

Prior to starting off, she briefed me on what to expect on the trail, and off we went. Soon Madelyn was looking back at me telling me to pick-up-the-pace as I kept falling behind. :) She eventually slowed her pace, so we could hike together.

Madelyn pointed out every plant that had needles on it and warned me to stay away. I did what the hike-master said and I prevented myself from getting ‘stuck’ by those pesky plants. She also demonstrated the correct way to throw a rock and hit a much larger rock. She never missed the larger rocks, but I struggled with a 50% ‘hit-rate’. Madelyn said I need alot more practice.

All in all it was a great hike, and Madelyn ranks as the cutest hike-master in Arizona. 8)

Did a circumnavigation of McDowell Preserve. Add Promenade Trail and Sonoran Trail in Fountain Hills. Cold and windy on top of East End Summit. Got sprinkled on a little on the Dixie Mine trail. The tailing pile from Dixie Mine is huge! That must be some hole, too bad its gated. Had to cut through some gated 'hoods to complete the hike.

After a week with my family in the South eating everything deep fried - needed a good exercise hike. Kids in school and had the day off. Went up to Sunrise peak and back. Parking lot about half full. Was really windy but not too cold and sunny. Brittle bush look very green - hoping it will be a good wildflower season this spring.

9L and I met up with Not Julia, DB and Hiker Dan for my first night hike of the year, whoo!
Ran into a javelina before we were even out of the wash...

Pretty sure it came running out of the drainage tube with some Goompas chasing after it!!! The Goompas never made an appearance but the Javelina posed for a few photos...darn thing refused to let me pin a "Hello my name is Fred" sticker on it...

Brisk hike up the hill, we regrouped at the major saddles, made it to the top in under an hour and breezed down the other side at what felt eerily like a jog to me!!

Great to see everyone again, I suspect this will happen again soon. Whoo!

Nice late afternoon hike. We started around 5:30pm and made our way up the 136th St wash. This is a fun section that I always enjoy. From there we reached the Sunrise Trail and made our way to the peak. After a short break, we made our way down to the 145th St TH and then took the equestrian trail back to the cars. It was a good evening.

Great to see/hike with everyone again! Saw my first javelina while hiking (I've seen them while off-roading before, but never while walking).. it popped right out of a drainage pipe in front of us! Pretty cool. Good night hike, as usual.. looking forward to the next one.

Morning hike from Lost Dog TH over to Sunrise trail up to the peak. We then went down to Sunrise TH at 145th and after short break headed back up Sunrise Peak and over to Lost Dog TH. Bagged the peak twice :) Really windy but otherwise nice day hike.

third time johnlp, denny and i have hiked sunrise over and back on thanksgiving
jj and lil d came along today, too
pretty good breeze from the east, so we didn't loiter much on the peak
not many others going up, but quite a few including one large group on the east side
nice cool sunny morning
first hike with jj and lil d - good hiking with you, guys
perfect choice for a holiday: convenient, decent mileage and aeg, and finishing in time to gorge on thanksgiving dinner and football
very nice to hike with john and denny again - it's been awhile
a day to be thankful for all of my haz partners and good health so far this year :)

John let Kelly and I join him for his third annual Sunrise Pre-Thanksgiving feast. JJ and LilD joined us too. JJ picked us Mesa boys up and we met Kelly at the trailhead. A little cool and windy today but tolerable. it was a good workout and always great to hike with Kelly, John, JJ, and LilD. Thanks for the hike and Happy Thanksgiving to you and all the Hazers!

Enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving Day hike with some cool HAZ friends. Little cold and breezy up top but the rest of the hike was great. Nachos at Circle K on the way home! Yum.

Third annual Thanksgiving over and back hike on Sunrise with Kelly and Denny with special guest appearances from JJ and lil D. Despite the cold wind we had a great relaxing hike. It is truly a pleasure hiking with all of you.

Thanks to HAZ for making this all possible. :)

Decided to get my legs under me again after a grueling saturday ML. Nice 5 mile hike up and over the peak. We shuttled our cars to make it a one way over rather than just up and down the same way. 145th side is so much more entertaining. The lower part of 128th side is pretty boring. My first time up here in daylight! Passed another friend who was mad at me because she saw my truck in the parking lot and I hadn't invited her. Apparently I forgot she told me she was gonna hike it today too. ](*,)

Nice day, warm for this time of year, but very strong winds made it pleasant. Gusting over 30mph was nice :)

I wanted to get in a warmup hike before my backpack into Reavis from the north on Saturday. I wanted to get done before dusk so this is the one I picked. There were only 5 other people that picked this trail for their afternoon hike so I had it mostly to myself. I had a pretty good hike I think. Saw two very little lizards and a few birds (heard some quail) but not much else today. The temp was pleasant.

For some reason, I don't remember the Lost Dog TH being paved but it certainly is now. On the drive home 101 west got bogged down from the 51 all the way to Cave Creek exit. It was 6:15 before I got home.

From MapmyFitness Log: ascent is 1181 feet with the climb being 2.75 miles long at a 7.7% grade. My only breaks was fiddling with Kemosabee again. My radio app seems to do more tuning out then TuneIn; guess I'll just have to live with it.

After work hike in the perfect weather. I was surprised by the lack of people on the trail. My first time hiking out of this TH.

Ran a bit on the way back to beat the darkness.

Pretty sunset views form the peak and saddles.

Date hike tonight (hike then dinner) and kids at home with babysitter. So nice that almost the entire hike is in the shade if you start late enough. We started at 5:05pm. Spent 25 minutes at the summit. Then back down and didn't need flashlight.

Just a handful of people on the trail. Used a baby wipe to "shower up" before dinner at an old favorite - Blue Adobe. Near intersection of FLW Blvd and Shea. Have eaten there since 2002. Reminds us of our newlywed days!
