Nice overcast day for an afternoon run. Pretty mellow run, wanted to stretch our legs and run some trails that we've overlooked this year. Have plans to do the Coldwater Rumble next month so figured I better scout out parts of the course. Started out on Coldwater, hit Dysart and made a big loop around the southern side of the park. Finished by running down the Rainbow Trail and back to the rodeo arena. Actually saw about 8 other people out running the trails today, not used to seeing that many other people once you get a half mile away from the parking lot.

Wanted to branch out and try something different this morning, plus add another 15 minutes to my Thursday runs. Did a loop of the Butterfield Trail to the Gadsden Trail, returning on the Butterfield Trail. It's been a while since I was on the Gadsden Trail and I forgot just how much of the trail goes through a wash. Would rather run uphill than through the wash, that section really slowed me down.

Toothaker trail out to Rainbow Valley trail was very up and down through small washes with one big wash. The RVT immediately ascended a few hundred feet but leveled off nicely for a good view of the city in the distance. Descended back down hill and got fairly flat, then met with the Dysart trail. Since the trail had leveled off, I elected to take Dysart and jog from there. Good workout with some ups and downs, then took it to the T with Butterfield Trail. From there back to the trailhead was very hilly but then very flat. Ran that whole length for a good finish to my workout.

I only ever saw one other person on the trails, out on a beautiful 80 degree day, so if you're okay paying the $6 entry fee to the park I recommend it. There were a lot of horses and a carriage ride once I approached the arena. There were also a lot of flies on the trail but they never land on you or bother you much.

Great morning for mountain biking. I have run all those trails at Estrella multiple times but this was my first time biking them. Biking is slower on the climbs but a lot faster down the hills.

Initial plan was to do Gadsden. However, I got "sidetracked" on a side trail :D As you are doing the Gadsden clockwise and you enter the main wash, there is a trail that immediately exits the wash on the east side of the wash. I had seen that trail on previous hikes and wondered, "could that be the lost trail that connects the competitive tracks to the rest of Estrella Park?" When I reached the top of the wash there is a north-south road coming from nearby homes going up into the hills. And of course, as I follow the road south, I start to come across splits in the road going off in various directions. (I hadn't planned on going too deep into the "wilderness". It was late in the day and I wanted to complete the Gadsden Trail. This was more of a recon mission.). Because of this I followed a road that gained elevation. From the rise, I could see the "main road" seemed to follow the curvature of the wash and there appeared to be several trails that headed east in the direction of the comptetitive tracks. I continued to follow the road I was on and it quickly died at a base of a mountain. As I headed back, I noticed another trail heading to the east. I couldn't help myself, I had to take advantage of the opportunity.

The trail was fairly faint as it wrapped around the mountain. The trail climbed and fell a little as it crested a foothill that flowed from the mountain. At a little over .25 miles (I think) the trail "T"ed into another trail. The northern portion dropped down to the desert floor heading toward the homes. The southern direction, which i took, climbed the side of the mountain gaining enough elevation to cross a ridgeline. As the trail dropped down from the ridgeline it became even more faint. There were several cairns that guided me into and out of a wash and then the trail just seemed to fade away. I was just about to turn around, when I saw it. A little over a 100 yards away was a "1 direction" trail sign that is used on competitive tracks to keep traffic flowing in the same direction. On the return journey I took the northern portion of the "T"ed trail and followed it down into the desert floor. It eventually turned westward and connected to the road that I came in on.

By the time I returned to the Gadsden Trail and the wash which I had strayed from it was past 5 pm. I knew I wouldn't have enough daylight to finish the Gadsden, but I still wanted to complete a trail. So I went with the next best option. I followed the Gadsden to where it connected to the Butterfield Trail and took that trail back to the car. I was surprised that I was able to get back to the car with some daylight left. The days are getting longer. I saw some hikers just as I started my hike, but after that not a one. No wildlife, except for quailand a cople of lizards. Weather was perfect!

Since moving out to Avondale I look at the Estrella's every day and wonder how to get to the top of the peaks. Knew eventually I would have to suck it up and do a long approach from the north side of the range. When I saw John planning a trip up to the ridgeline I knew I had no excuses to put off my explorations.

Met John at the rodeo arena parking lot and started the approach. Made great time on the park trails and were off trail and going vertical in under two hours. Shot up the approach to Peak 3567 on the north side of Corgett Wash taking the ridgeline straight up to Peak 2907 first. From there headed southeast towards our goal of Peaks 3567 & 3650. Took a different route down from John and headed down the main drainage from Peak 3650 until I hit the main spur of Corgett Wash. Intersected with John about a half mile from our rendezvous spot and headed back to our car the same way we came in.

To say the ridgeline of the Estrellas is rugged would be an understatement. One of the toughest hikes I have done in the past couple of years. Once on the ridgeline it was 4+ hours of continuous class 3 and occasional class 4 scrambling with cactus thrown in for good measure. You don't get a break from the cactus or scrambling the entire time spent on the ridge.

My quest to complete the entire Sierra Estrella Ridgline end to end continues. Todays segment included Peak 3567 and peak 3650. James (SpiderLegs) joined me for this trek today as he has been wanting to do some Estrella traversing himself.

We had perfect weather from start to finish. The views from 3567 are great as they are for most of the Ridgeline. I did see some evidence of another recent visitor to this area while up there. Maybe a Peak Bagger? Either way while up there you feel as if you are the first people to ever set foot on the long range. It just doesn't have the usual signs of others passing thru.

When we hit the second major peak I headed down a little over a half mile towards the next segment. This way I wouldn't have to do the connector on my next trip up. You can see that leg on the GPS link. James continued on while I did this and we met up shortly later.

All in all a great hike and it was good to meet and hike with another HAZ member.

Someday I hope to complete the entire Sierra Estrella Ridgeline. Todays hike was from the Estrella Mountain Regional Park up the Ridgeline with the hopes of making it to the reservation boundary line. I didn't get started until 10am and the hike is a slow one on the ridge so I didn't make it to the finish line. I fell short by a little over a mile and a half.

Unlike the Isis hike my desire to reach the goal was outweighed by the wise choice to turn back with safety in mind. Hiking this ridgeline in the dark would surely be trouble.

The Sierra Estrella Ridgeline is a different animal all together. Hiking it is a rugged arduous journey yet somehow it has an exhilarating effect. As I hiked it today it shredded my legs and the cactus poked at me constantly.

In the end it put a smile on my face and somehow lifted my soul.

Chilly start to the morning, only about 45 degrees at the trailhead. Went clockwise starting at the rodeo grounds down the Butterfield Trail and then ran the entire Gadsden Trail. From there took the Pedersen Trail for a little bit to Toothaker and finished on the Rainbow Trail. Most of the Gadsden Trail is in a wash, which makes for a long slog when running. Tough to make decent time on it.

Did see a meteorite come down right at sunrise and it was close enough that it looked like it landed in the Estrella Mountains someplace.

Perfect morning for a run. Took an easy jaunt on some new trails for me to explore. Basically did a counter-clockwise loop starting on Quail, over to Rainbow, down Dysart and Coldwater. Worked my way back up Gadson to Butterfield, back on Dysart to Toothaker. Finished off by going on Baseline to the Saddle Trail and hit Quail again back to my car.

The more I explore EMRP, the more I like it. With all of the rolling hills and going up and down washes it is good trail system for running. However, if I had to hike it I might feel different.

Belated post. Hiked Thursday, after work at the Estrella's. Did an in and out on Butterfield. There was a mini dust storm that looked worse than it turned out to be, the storm was coming in from the south, so I as probably shielded by the Estrellas to an extant. Nice hike with a nice variance in weather.
