While on our way to the Lavender Festival on Sunday in Concho, we thought of hiking the Buena Vista Trail south of Show Low. But, alas, like other trails in the area, it was closed due to fire danger caused by the severe drought. So, Fool Hollow, a state park, was the replacement. So, We paid the $7 fee, and found plenty of parking options near the Bluebird Ramada on the west shore. We easily found the trail, which is mostly dirt but some cement. It was still in the place I left it the last time I hiked here in October 2013. Thing was the lake moved. Shrunk, anyway, due to the severe drought. This was particularly visible on the south shore. Where I had edged around water there almost 5 years ago, the south end of the lake was now 150-200 yards off to the north. Nice benches perched along the shoreline for visitors to watch waterfowl go about their business. now looked down on nothing but dry land and hapless islands that had lost their protective moats. So sad to see.

I was spending some time with LiLD and his family up north. The weather was rainy but my son and I snuck out for a quick hike between drizzles. Great to get some one on one conversing with LiLD with a pretty backdrop! :y:
I did manage to slip and fall one time. ](*,)
Almost forgot this tidbit. While sitting in the dinning area Issac carried a centipede on a little piece of bark to the door to show us. :o :o :scared: He just kept turning the bark over when the centipede went under. Yikes!

Early morning arrival at the lake for our overnight stay.
Checked in, set up camp & loaded up for a hike around the park.
I had stayed at the park 6 weeks earlier and had a good familiarization of the area, spent the morning showing my 2 partners everything. We hiked from our campsite around to the other side of the lake up to the dam then back.
Lots of people being the weekend, the lake & park looked great and we had some scenic cloudy skies above towards the end.
Good start to our weekend!

After a month now of enduring the Frye Fire, smoke & heat ..... I needed to get away for a night!
Had never visited Fool Hollow Lake in Show Low before and decided on a quick overnight.

Salt River Canyon - Spent about an hour at the crossing rest stop checking out the area. Walked the old bridge over then down to the river. The Salt was not flowing much, but was still a cool sight from above and below.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area (state park) - Arrived early and spent the first 4 hours hiking the entire park. Walked the Lake Trail and through all the campgrounds & day use areas. This is one nice park, 5 stars from me!
At noon I checked in to my campsite (bald eagle loop #24) and got camp all set up before spending the rest of the day and evening walking the lake and visiting with others including the friendly staff. There were a TON of people there with all campgrounds full, but that was OK and expected being the 4th of July weekend.
Night came and I spent it with an unexpected campfire (no fire restrictions for Apache-Sitgreves right now) :o
dinner and a little star photography before an early bed.

Awoke at 5am, packed up and headed out back home. Before leaving the cool high pine country, I completed a short morning hike along the Buena Vista Trail just outside of town.
Show Low, Fool Hollow & my hike were all beautiful, I hated to leave after just 1 day, but will be back for a more extended stay in the future!

The actual name of the lake is Fool Hollow but I guess the apostrophe "s" is a small thing to quibble about. Traveled to Show Low with a friend who was on a work assignment and decided while she was busy to take a stroll around the lake on a windy, cool Tuesday afternoon. It was my first visit. The wind blew so hard it caused white caps on what is usually described as a serene lake. The highlight was finding a large flock of ducks bobbing in the waves near Wildlife Island at the lake's south end. Stopping at one of the benches, I dug out my field glasses and counted 67 birds in one small area, most of them Mallards but also a few Redheads. Not much to see this time of year. A handful of anglers on the docks, about a half dozen hikers and two bikers. No boaters. Did an out and back, a distance of 3.52 miles, stopping a few times to take in the views. It was eerie thinking about the old town of Adair lying beneath the lake. I'd seen a very good Australian film, "Jindabyne," about a sunken town used as a symbol of the country's dark past of racial hatred, and remembering it had a souring effect on me.
