I postponed my regularly scheduled massage to take advantage of today’s cooler weather. I started up Telegraph around 7:45. I’m not a big fan of this trail, but it’s okay when nobody else is on it. Headed west on National then down Pyramid. Still a ghost town at that point. I took off my vest before heading up Bursera, as the breeze had died down. Bursera went by quickly, then I headed east at National. Took off the wool arm sleeves at the biggest climb on National, and started to wish I had worn shorts instead of pants. Quick side trip to Goat Hill, then back down National to Telegraph Pass. There was a woman just below the Eagle’s Nest who was frozen in fear about the ledges. I was confused, because the trail was a good 4-5’ wide right there, with nothing I would consider to be a big drop. Regardless, she did not feel the same way about things. I talked with her for a moment and she asked me to take her dogs back downhill so she could focus on getting herself back down. I grabbed their leashes and took them most of the way back down to Telegraph Pass while she followed. While we walked, I gave her a few suggestions of local trails she might like a little better during the two weeks she’ll be in town. After that, I tried to make up for the lost time the rest of the way back to the trailhead. A few more people on Telegraph at that point, but still pretty empty. Perfect temps today, and nice to get a slightly longer workout hike in.

A lolli pop loop for the afternoon. Parked at the pullout on the San Juan Rd at the National Trail crossing. National out to Bursera to Gila and back to the National for our ride home. Met one hiker and saw a few poppies coming out. Some slopes were covered in a very small yellow flower. Great day with gentle cool breezes.

Finally feeling good enough to hike again, but kept the pace pretty mellow. Up Bursera, with a side trip to the high point of 1956’. Lots of flowers (mustard?) at the west end of Bursera, with hundreds of bees all over them. Nice to see, but I hurried through that section. East on National, taking my time to get pictures of the mines. I noticed the first poppies just east of the Ranger junction. Pleasant hike down Pyramid. Warm, but breezy. Two weeks ago it was winter, today was spring—kind of sad about that. I’m hoping for some more winter storms in February.

Fiddleneck along Bursera. Some poppies along National. Should be good in a couple of weeks.

Staying over at my son’s place in Chandler ,after a night out , puts me only 15 minutes from the 19th ave and Chandler trailhead on the newly opened portion of the 202 , gives me the opportunity to hit this side of SoMo. Planned it to be a family hike to the Lost Ranch ruin but as the morning wore on the excuses flowed and bailouts occurred thus it became a solo hike. Weather was ideal not too hot even in early afternoon for this sun exposed area. Not being prepared for more than a trip up to the Lost Ranch Ruins , decided to extend slightly and use Gila trail , I think, to connect with Bursera Trail. Not as crowded as expected, believe I saw an elephant tree along a slope next to the trail, but I’m no botanist, even identified a Mexican poppy today.

Saw Marlin (Chris) as I was ascending Pyramid. It's been a few years. Good to see you Chris.
A few wild flowers starting to bloom. Fiddleneck, scorpion weed...
More cars than I have ever seen at and near the trailhead.
Beautiful day for a hike. :)

After being out of commission for about two weeks it felt great to hit the trails again. It’s amazing how out of shape one can get in such a short layoff. 😩 Started in the fog which drifted in and out all day. Sweating when out and cold when in. I meet 5 women at the cross trail heading down to Gila and they continued for a short time on Bursera. As I headed out of the canyon I could hear them all the way back To the TH. I called them the 5 G’s. ( 5 Gals Gabbing Gossip Group) 😁😁 sounded like they were having fun! When they saw me at the TH at the end of the day they accused me of their guide abandoning them—Yep! They were having a good time!! Nice to see hikers having fun!!

Did the usual loop clockwise. Noticed a few new trail sign posts on National, attempting to “block” some of the social trails. Saw about 10 people on Pyramid, nobody else the rest of the way. For the first time ever, I noticed horseshoe prints going both directions on the top mile of Pyramid. Right knee was a little tender at times, so I took it easy on the downhill portions. Warm out today.

Counter clockwise, up Pyramid, down Bursera. Felt better than I did last year, but apparently I took slightly longer. A coyote was hanging around the base of the pyramid incline that seemed a little too comfortable with all the people.

Late afternoon hike to get the blood flowing. It was a fairly cool day. A fair number of people were out and about. A couple started just ahead of me. They were a little faster than I was, but they stopped periodically and I ended up staying close. Annoyingly they were carrying a radio and were blasting a football game loudly. About 2/3 of the way up the hill they stopped to rest and I passed them. After that I picked up the pace and I was motivated to stay far enough ahead of them so I wouldn't have to hear their radio.

I took the connecting trail down to the Gila Trail for the return. Happily I saw (and heard) nobody at all the back. I celebrated with a selfie at dusk.

Update: This time there were only a couple of elevation drop outs in the RS GPS track. Last time I was listening to podcasts during the hike which may have contributed to the GPS elevation issue, and this time I didn't. Or maybe the elevation drop outs could be when I took pictures with my phone.

Decided to do a bit of exploring from the trailhead at the end of Chandler Blvd , a long ways from home for me but fairly close to my son’s new place in Chandler. Thought I may be doing more hiking in this area than before so decided to do some getting familiar today. Parking lot was pretty full and some street parking. Went a short ways along pyramid trail then headed up toward the Lost Ranch ruins , once there watched some of the young folk clamber around. From there decided to try a use trail I could visualize to acquire the Busera Trail , after crossing a wash found the use trail and continued on it until I turned up a steep slope to get on the Busera. Was helpful to have a crowded trail as I could occasionally look up and see the trail whereabouts. A cool and windy day made for nice hiking.

After nursing my 3 yr old Grandson back to health after a week it was great to take an afternoon hike. Since I usually get out early in the am I got to were shorts today. And NO! You didn't have to put on your darkest sunglasses!!😆 Even though it was a short walk, the short Bursera loop, it was nice good to get out!!! Few hikers out and some bikers. One brave soul took his bike down the hill from Bursera to Gila! 😬 He thought twice about it though!!

We were needing to work off some of the caloric sins of too many Christmas parties, so a few extra miles got added to this loop. Up Bursera, east on National, with a side trip to Goat Hill. Down Ranger, then east on Los Lomitas. The “restoration” along Los Lomitas looks like dozens of fifty pound gophers attacked the area. Terrible. Up Kiwanis, which has an Area Closed sign any direction you look. At the top of Kiwanis, we headed west on National, then down Pyramid. Kind of warm by the time we finished.

Route Scout GPS Route Recorded on Route Scout View
The South Mountain Master Plan trails map shows a proposed trail starting from the corner of Shaughnessey & Chandler Blvd, and going up and connecting to Bursera. I drew a track that follows the proposed route reasonably closely (minus a few switchbacks in the steep part in the middle) and we set off to see how closely we could follow it.

The beginning was walking across relatively flat desert as we headed north-northeast towards the mountains. There was a use trail on most of this part. As we neared the mountain, I kept us just above the left (west) bank of the wash as we headed up. We steeply climbed up the hillside as I aimed for the ridge above us on the west. The proposed trail has some switchbacks in this area, but I generally kept a straight line on a game trail with one switchback just below the ridge. Once on the ridge, we headed northeast again. It seemed like the proposed trail somehow switchbacks up the steep part of this ridge, but either I guessed incorrectly on the trail placement, or they have a lot of work cut out for them on constructing this trail. Despite a little bit of brush, it was much easier to head up the drainage on the left (north) side of the ridge. Some easy scrambling, and still steep, but nothing terrible. As we were nearing the top, I turned left and headed up the most logical way up to Bursera on the ridge. Looking at the track and proposed trail showed that my guess here was spot on and we connected to Bursera at exactly the correct location.

The main goal accomplished, we decided to hike around a little more and headed west on Bursera, then west on Gila. Once over the saddle on Gila, we headed over to the last remaining old building west of the park and looked around there. After that, we headed southeast up the old mining road/trail, and then east on that ridge back towards the saddle. A low-flying drone buzzed over our heads along this ridge. Not sure if was from the 202, the new housing development, or from a group of people who were standing over at the Gila-Bursera junction. Once back on Gila, we headed east where I slowed the pace a little to put some distance between us and the group in case they were out there in some official capacity.

Once back on Bursera, we headed east to a faint path that heads steeply up the ridge, then steeply back down into the neighborhood on the other side. It’s been a couple of years since I used this path, but I used to use it a lot when I lived over there. Once down in the neighborhood, we followed the path along the wash back out to the corner where we had parked.

Nice hike with good conversation, and fun to get some offtrail hiking in. Good temps, but extremely hazy.
