I decided to get out and stretch my legs this morning by doing this hike again.

There was a good bit of cloud cover, but the humidity was still up a bit.

The desert is looking really green and the saguaros are fat and happy.

There were lots of butterflies out and lots and lots of white-lined sphinx caterpillars on and along the trail.

This is just another exercise hike that is close to home.

The temperature was about as pleasant as it gets here in mid August, and there was lots of cloud cover, but it was really, really humid. I was drenched with sweat by the time I got back.

I saw a few people on the trail, which shouldn't be too surprising for a Sunday.

The desert is really green right now!

I decided to once again do this exercise hike close to home.

I waited until about 8:00 AM to start in order to give the rain a chance to stop. I had 1.7 inches at my house yesterday and another 0.25 inches last night and this morning, which isn't too bad.

I did not see any other hikers out -- the only person that I saw was driving a service truck going up Thompson Peak Road.

There was lots of cloud cover for most of the hike, but it sure was humid!

I did another hike close to home -- this time I did a lasso loop hike from the Dixie Mine up to Bell Pass, instead of doing an out-and-back hike

It was mostly sunny, but there was a decent breeze so it wasn't too hot.

I saw 2 trail runners, but no other humans were out on the trails

With the forests being shut down due to fire danger, I opted to do this one again.

There was cloud cover on about 80% of the hike, which was nice. Other than that, there was nothing noteworthy about the hike.

With all of the forest closures and with some cloudy skies I decided to stay close to home again today and do this hike.

Temperatures were a bit warm and it was more humid than usual, but the cloudy skies were nice.

There were lots of small bunny rabbits out on the trails -- I wonder what happened to the coyotes?

I saw one other hiker and one trailrunner, but that was it for other humans.

I wanted to stretch my legs this morning but didn't feel like going far from home, so I did this hike again.

I saw a few bunny rabbits on the trail, but that was it for wildlife.

I got started at 5:30 and the temps weren't bad for a while, but it was a bit warm by the time that I got back to the TH.

I only saw 2 other hikers -- one at Bell Pass and another not too far from the TH on the way back.

This isn't the most exciting summertime hike, but at least there are no fires in the area.

I did another early morning exercise hike in the McDowells, going the back way up to Bell Pass

I only saw one other hiker.

On the way back I came upon an angry rattlesnake in some grass just off the Prospector Trail. I don't think that I have ever heard a snake rattle as much as this one did. I waited for the snake to slither away, but all he wanted to do was rattle at me. I eventually went around the snake on the other side of the trail and continued on my way.

I have been wanting to hike to Bell Pass from the Adero Canyon TH, and the weather was nice today so I decided to go for it.

This is good exercise hike, and there weren't many people out on the trails -- maybe a half dozen mountain bikers and about the same number of hikers. Seeing about one person per mile on an urban hike isn't too bad.

It was cloudy in the early part of the hike, and it drizzled for a few minutes. The sun was out for the second half of the hike, and it was a nice 58 degrees when I got back to the TH.

I saw a couple of blue dicks, a few lupine, a few chuparosa, and some ocotillo blooms. I'd say that I saw a flower every mile, so that is about as "isolated" as it gets.

I haven't hiked up to Thompson Peak in quite a few years. Nice day for it.
Got going at first light from 104th St TH. Beat the crowds on Gateway and up to Bell Pass. Only saw 6 people until I returned to Bell Pass on the way back.
One trail runner I saw three times. Once when he passed me going up Bell Pass, once when I was ascending Thompson Peak (he was descending), and finally as I was descending Thompson Peak he was making his second ascent!
The McDowells got some rain last night. A little petrichor in the air. Looked Like Mt Ord and Four Peaks got a little snow. Great workout. :)

Another training hike (with some light jogging). I borrowed the name and stats from Bifrost who did this same loop+ and posted a GPS route on 10/21/17. Looks as though he enjoys big loops too - thank you sir. Started at the 104/Bell TH - Levee - Bell Pass - Prospector - Thompson/Towers - Dixie Mine - Coachwhip - Windmill - East End - Tom's Thumb - Windgate - Gateway Loop - 104th St Spur.

Anyway, was a nice day to be in the McDowells - albeit a little warm. Was surprised by the number of people on the short section we shared near Tom's Thumb. One guy coming down the trail even through his hands up in the air and stopped in the middle as I was coming at him, as if to say WTF. Without breaking stride as I cleanly skirted around him, I nicely explained that, "you yield to hikers going uphill, that is how you hike." I got a, "yes, that's what I thought" from a group behind him. I accept that many on these short, popular, urban trails are ignorant to the concept of hiking etiquette, and I wouldn't have said anything had he not thrown up his hands - oh well. The few that I did encounter more than a few miles from a TH were nice and knew proper etiquette. All in all, another great day in the "wilds" of AZ! : )

I decided to hike up the back way to Bell Pass from Fountain Hills, which is a hike that I have done many times. This time I also decided to hike up to Peak 3515, which is SSE of Bell Pass.

It was a great day to be out hiking -- it was a sunny day with temperatures in the upper 50's. It was windy when I got up to Bell Pass, so I added a layer before heading up to Peak 3515. There is a very well defined social trail from Bell Pass up to Peak 3515, so I followed it as I ascended. The social trail made a sharp turn to the right at one point, and I followed it even though it looked like the best way to go was to continue straight uphill. In retrospect, I should have continued straight uphill.

I followed the social trail for a bit, and then decided to head up toward the summit -- doing so was a bit steep, but I made it up to a ridgeline that was northeast of the summit. To get to the summit required a bit of boulder hopping, a section of which was a bit of a knife edge. It wasn't too bad and was kind of fun, although the wind was blowing like crazy. There were nice views at the summit, but with the cold wind blowing I didn't hang around too long.

I enjoyed the hike, and going up to Peak 3515 was a nice twist to the hike!

A close to home, good workout hike. I wanted to get something in before the rains hit.

I prefer the 104th st/Bell TH, to stay away from the masses at the Gateway TH.

Bell Pass Trail gets your heart pumping. Only a handful of hikers met getting to the saddle.

I saw no one on the Prospector Trail heading over to Thompson Peak Rd.

I was a bit surprised at how many people we climbing to Thompson Peak. I've never passed more than a few on this climb.
This time there were 15+ passed. You know a trail is steep when your heels don't touch the ground while climbing. That happens on this one in the paved spots. This climb really gives your calves a workout.

I stayed dry until a mile from the car. I hit a 5 minute squall that got me a bit wet.

I was wanting a workout out close to home so I decided to do this one from the Adero Canyon TH. I copied this hike from one that @hikerdw did recently. I followed his route with one exception: when I got to the end of the Promenade Trail I took the Lower Sonoran Trail, whereas @hikerdw took the Sonoran Trail. After about 2 miles the two trails converge at the boundary of the Fountain Hills Preserve and the Maricopa County Preserve. The Lower Sonoran Trail is the easier of the two.

I did a big CCW loop through 3 preserves: the Fountain Hills Preserve; the McDowell Mountain Maricopa County Preserve; and the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve. I never saw anyone in the Fountain Hills or the McDowell Mountain Preserves, but I did see a few folks on the trails in the Scottsdale Preserve, but not too many.

This isn't the most exciting hike in the world, and there was a lot more sun that what I was hoping for -- 19 miles of full sun is a bit much for me. If I do this one again I will pick a cloudy day. The desert is a bit drab now, but hopefully we'll get some rain over the next few days.
