Exploratory up Dog Gap... Exceptional! There's an entire canyon hidden away up in there, and it appears to go all the way up on to Burnt Ridge. There are a couple of dangerous climbs to do... smart to set a safety rope, but doable. We turned back below the top due to time constraints; we'll be back.

Since neither Will nor Mary had done the Boulder Garden section of the main canyon, we proceeded up to the old line cabin then dropped into the canyon bottom for our descent. It was as exceptional as always; we scrambled down too fast.

I checked out an early exit below the Spring (well above the Grey Cliffs)... and it was good. We hit the trail easily and enjoyed a pleasant walk out. There are probably ten more exploratory hikes to complete in Dog Canyon. Most will go on the Fall calendar?

Ross, Will and Mary along on this day...

Exploratory...off trail on south side of canyon...followed bench around to Deadman south...checking Dead Dog... then, back over and up to the Cleft. Good shot at topping out; we'll be back for that with looping options. Descended ridge to mp1.5... Trail down just in time to catch the other group...Mary, luster, Clinton... back from Kong's loop. Lots of hiking options in the Dog...v

plan was for Joplin Ridge... snow blizzard turned us around. Exceptional settings and no problem hiking the snowy trail. Ross and Mary out... some time spent looking for my missing rock! No luck.

Ross, Mary and Unjip doing the full trail for the first time! Lynda came along to the Eyebrow... jumped six wild sheep, up close and personal, on her way back down. We encountered a huge herd (20+) below the Eyebrow, and got to watch them dance across the base of the canyon cliffs... Impressive!

Great weather... even a touch too warm. That is about over.

group up the lower canyon... may have been a bit overly challenging on the scramble out, but they seemed up to it. 8 year old William did great, so it must not have been too hard!

One exceptional loop! We figure 8'd the canyon/trail... ascending initially up to the Narrows... then up and out to the trail, following it up to the old line cabin where we dropped back into the canyon. From there, enjoyed a variety of bedrock mixed with giant boulders for a semi-maze descent to the Narrows.

There the rope and harnesses came out... the upper fall proved to be just a scramble, but the middle and lower falls were rapped.

We tried to capture the feel of the Narrows, but I need to see how others pics came out... I stayed up on the cliff edge shooting. Ross did the same on the other side of the canyon shooting video. Jody... hopefully was shooting pics from the bottom?

All in all, just a great looping route.

Pics of the day on Facebook are confusing folks who thought they knew what hiking Dog Canyon was like!

Great outing!

Exploratory up the canyon bottom confirmed one really nice canyon. Lower section is an exceptional riparian area... bedrock levels with fern and flowing water. Above the water... nice bedrock shelves to enjoy, mixed with rocky gravel walking. Then: The Narrows! This section holds three dryfalls creating some blocked off areas... not safe to climb up into... but, we did a small section then reversed and scrambled up a very direct drainage up to the cliff tops... walked the edges checking out the Narrows. then hit the trail for the ascent up to the line cabin, checking the upper section... it turned out to be huge boulders, bedrock and lots of rock hopping.

The potential appears to be to do the first half just like we did... then, at the line cabin, reenter the canyon and descend to the Narrows... rappel the three dryfalls, enjoying the cloistered canyon sections... then...? climb out and finish up on the trail... or just walk out the bottom.

It is not the normal Dog Canyon Day!

Linda and Ross showed up for the Meetup... joined by Nancy from Belgium. Great morning weather. Hard to figure why more folks were not out enjoying this great hike.

Drove out early to log some AEG... did that, then headed up the arroyo to see if it might be feasible to ascend he real Dog Canyon. It looks good! Also checked out the formal riparian trail; that was a less than experience!

I may schedule 9am starts all this month to give me time for a three hour hit before the group hikes...?

to hit the month's training mark I need to stay ahead of a 5,000' daily AEG average. This month should kick off nicely, but how long before I fall behind? May be a very interesting month!

It was a perfect day weather wise. I started out a bit slow, however made up my time at a steady pace. Was shocked when I looked at the time and found I was at the cabin in 1 1/2 hours. This was the first time I went any further. It was a bit steep on to the eyebrow, but I was okay. I had heard so much about the eyebrow, I got a bit nervous. It was fun. I even climbed down with some of the others to a rock ledge.

Rain and snow holding off, no wind (calm in fact), but completely overcast with temps in the 30s when I set out. So, today was a compromise hike. I didn't get to explore Corrizo Peak as hoped, but I didn't want to do Alamo Canyon, in this weather, for the first time.

I believe I made the correct choice, the trail is fine, the views are OK, and the mountains on the west side of the basin were socked in with low clouds for the majority of the day. Apache Point and Sunspot ended up being in low clouds, as well.

Everything is cold and lifeless. Hardly any birds, no insects making sounds, and with no wind, and me wearing my hood most of the hike, it was eerie quiet. Just 3 to 4 months to Spring! I opted to skip Joplin Point, as I got to my end point a little after my turn around time. Instead, I walked a little up 90B to see Sunspot, which was enveloped in low clouds, with snow, or virga falling.

I added in an additional 300' of AEG, as the route manager results at 318' of AEG for the trail when descending.

A pretty nice hike to the forest road at the eastern end of Dog Canyon. Overall, Dog Canyon is a very nice hike. The creek crossing at nearly 2.9 miles in is a nice stop and there was some water for the dog to enjoy. After that, the uphill opens up a lot of nice views of the canyon. The top is a let down, but the canyon is over well before then. Stats are taken from the sign at the top of the trail, at the end.

BTW, there is no staff manning the office at Oliver Lee SP, and the self service fee station only accepts cash. I was not paying $20 for the day, and since the ticket they leave tells you to deposit money in the fee station or visit the office, which is closed and has a sign saying they have no money to fund staff, I opted to ignore and will simply not pay. They claim a $25 administrative fee will be added to the price, but if you can't break money and don't staff a park office on a Saturday at 1100 or 1710, how can you expect everyone to pay?
