Got to the Fraesfield TH a little after 5 am and was on the trails just before sunrise. I wanted to do the whole 136th Street Express Trail, so I actually started off taking the Black Hill Trail from the parking area. This trail pretty much shadows the entrance to the TH and took me to the beginning of the 136th. From there it was a "straight shot", (there are actually countless twists and turns along the way, but it is pretty much a north-south trail) to the end of the trail. During the run, I counted 14 official trails that connect to the 136th that take you further into the preserve, (there were also 3 fairly well defined unnamed trails that did so as well), the last one being the Hawknest. It was interesting to see that after Hawknest, the trail surface changed noticeable. It was easy to tell that it was seldom used by bikers. I imagine that most of the trails in the preserve probably looked like this initially. It was rather anticlimactic to reach the end of the trail and to find it exiting onto the 136th street road. At that point, I turned around and retraced my track up until Monument Hill Trail which I used to get me back to the TH. Weather was great. No clouds and no breeze, but at 5am it was actually a little chilly out...maybe mid 60's and it was just reaching 80 as I finished. Wildlife was rabbits....a lot of rabbits (this is the third weekend in row where I am "chasing" these guys down the trail ), and some chipmunks. No hikers, but I encountered 9 bikers while I was out. |
