Up the south face and down the SW ridge. I took a trail back which ran below the south face of Capitol. I think it was the Thunder MT trail. It added about a mile and 200 feet.

Nice day for a hike in Sedona! Got out early and had a nice time. This was a fun and challenging hike with a great reward at the top, splendid views! Hung out at the top for about 30 min. Took me 1.5 hours to get to the top and an hour to get down. Met some hikers on the way down and one of them was dressed like he was out for a hike in a park; he had slacks on and a nice button down shirt and he was in his late 50's or early 60's. He said that he does this hike once a month, that is why it looked like he was taking a walk in the park. There was a register at the top and I was surprised that so many people get up and do this hike, there was a family that signed in and they had an 8 yr old and 10 yr old and said they did great. Overall a fun hike on a beautiful day!

I was really hot on the south face and it was a bit much for me to take at times. I hadn't been on this in a while and I generally found it to be good, but the erosion has been really bad. The late day views were great.

There are lots of birds making noise around the base but it's still quiet and wintry on top. Good views of the Peaks today.

I had wanted to do this again for a while and had planned on doing it over the MLK weekend. I was sick then, so this was the first day I had available to do it. The winter storms have been cruel to Capitol, and the trails are really eroded. In some spots they are back to being washes. Hiking with temperatures in the 50s felt hot to me, especially since I was in teens the prior evening. It was pretty nice out and I took a few pics.

Jake wanted to do this with me leading and I wanted to do something that wasn't Mount Elden, so a plan was hatched to do this today. It worked out and conditions were perfect for an October Hike. The lighting was great coming down and I think Jake got some good pictures. Out times are different because he includes time on the summit. 1:50 up, 1:30 down. We went down the SE drain.

I really wanted to do this climb so I got Jim to go out there with me. I almost turned back at the first pitch but Jim coached me into doing it. In hindsight, I should've given him my camera to get a picture of me soiling my pants :sk: . I was shaking in my boots coming away from it, definitely pushed my level of comfort a little over the edge. Jim took my picture grinning like an idiot coming up the chimney. As always, views from the summit rocked. Signed the summit register (has yet to be stolen). Going down Jim tried to coerce me into going back down the first pitch, I maintained my decision to take the south-east drainage. Thanks to Jim for showing me the route and being patient with my fear of heights.

A nice relaxed trip up to the summit and back with fellow HAZ members. Good weather and nice conditions. Joe ought to be posting GPS and pics.

Moseyed around slowly on the butte with good company. Met John & Jim and did MG prior to the hike. Good to finally bag this bad boy after two previous failed attempts. There's really nothing that concerned me as being scary. Just loose footing on steep slopes. I probably wouldn't do this much faster than 2 hours total on my own as you really have to watch your steps.

The views are top notch as I expected being the center piece of Sedona! :)

Distance is probably a tad longer as we came down a slightly different route. However my batteries died in the GPS so I'm going with what I know.

Second half of a Sedona double header. After Morning glory, there was a shuttle with lunch stop to the trail head. Jim route finding and Joe providing motivation got us up the rock face and all the way to the top for a very pleasant stay. The view is impressive. My GPS route includes the south east return down a rocky wash. I think I would have taken the semi-exposed ledge return as quicker than all the shifting boulders and bushes. Using Redroxx44 post on bushwhack, this was a BW4 (pint of blood) for me. Some face climbs, the ledge walk and a really classic chimney provided interesting climbs.

I followed up Morning Glory with this old favorite. It was really hot on the south face, and the rock was burning my hands if I held on to it for too long. I felt like it was well over 100 on that south face, but officially it was only in the high 90s when I was ascending. I spent some time on top watching ravens play in the rising air currents. They like to fight and ride up and down really fast in the wind. The Swallows do the same, but they are much quieter. I went down the southeast gully since I didn't feel like hiking down in the really hot sun, or holding on to super hot rock.

I thought I' go back down to take this in before things get too busy. It was a nice, but hot hike. The south face radiates a lot of heat right at you. I filled in my panorama gap in my original photo set.

I didn't study Jim's description enough. My first ascent went nowhere being a tad bit too west. My second attempt led me to what Jim describes as the "First Pitch". However I followed some paint dots 20 yards right. This led up to a crack that tunneled through to a ledge that looked too dicey for me, especially when I looked down.

Coming down I roamed over (unknowingly) to the First Pitch. I took one look and said to myself "na this ain't it" ](*,) : rambo :

I went down on this warm but overcast day to take in this great Sedona Peak. I took some more pictures to get cracking on a hike description.

We started from the parking area at the end of Andante Drive off of 89A and took the south face to the summit. Its a fun climb, but its not the GPS route on the HAZ hike description page. The vague summit post description of this route says its class 4. I'd say it is, but it was pretty easy class 4. There really are great views on top, and I think its possibly one of the best things to do in Sedona.
Afterwards we went and did Morning Glory spire. My partner summited, but I turned back about 100 feet from the summit. I blame my knee, which is still bothering me after nearly 2 weeks, but really I was tired and uncomfortable on the rounded rock with few foot and hand holds. I want to try again the next time I head down to Sedona. I added 400 feet to this climb for Morning Glory.
If interested in the south face, park at Andante and walk up the road to the east. Find one of the hiking trails that leaves the road and head towards the south face. There are pretty well worn climbing trails as you near the base, so as you head up it should become easier to see the route.

Thunder Mountain is a sunny, hot hike straight up the side of a mountain. The trail is fairly straightforward until you start hiking uphill quickly.

From the parking, hike east on a small trail about a quarter of a mile until a larger trail heads north. Follow this trail north until you see a big boulder, about another quarter of a mile. From this boulder, look for a big juniper tree growing out of the mountain. Head straight up the mountain aiming for a rock ramp to the right of this juniper. You should be at a short 4th Class (this means you must use hands and feet to ascend, but don't need a rope) section. After this, bushy ramps head back to the right and then it's cross country trail to the summit. We didn't actually get past the little scramble because our dog wasn't willing to do it, so that's definitely something to keep in mind if you have a dog. The scramble drops off on one side, and some dogs get a little troubled by this.

Again, this is a difficult, steep hike. Bring plenty of water and make sure you are sure footed. A wrong step could be disastrous. This hike is difficult and does not follow much of a trail to the rocky ramp. Apparently it also does not follow a trail after the rocky ramp either. Be sure to tread lightly and spread out to minimize impact if there is no trail. Also, realize that although I may have felt comfortable climbing the aforementioned rocky ramp ropeless, this sentiment may not be shared by all.

This trail should not be attempted in wet weather or if thunderstorms are expected.
