Bushwack to an Saddleback 5001 in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. 0830 start from the Visitors Center up the Phone Line trail for a couple of mile, the a straight up bushwack out of the canyon. When I reached the saddle I saw a large mountain lion running away (not a bad thing). That made my day! While I waited for the others to get up to the saddle, I looked for him to see if I could get at least one pic. No luck. However the rest of the day was perfect. Saw one deer in the distance, a peregrine falcon, and the first poppies of the season.

Went down to Tucson today to hike with my former employee Eric. He wanted to do something around 6 miles so Blacketts Ridge came to mind. Once up top we decided to drop down and return on the Phoneline Trail. Not really sure it was worth the effort but it made for a fun adventure none the less.

A great day supporting our friend Richard! Richard ran up to Prison Camp via Bear Canyon - we met him there with some extra water and then I ran with him on the rest of his loop back down to the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center.

This requires a drop off or shuttle but is a pretty fun downhill route - nice wash out of Prison Camp to start the day (gate is open now btw so you can park at the end of the road again), views from Shreve Saddle, a hint of fall and lovely green at Sycamore Reservoir, nice rest at Bear Saddle, the amazing East Fork Trail (love the views and trail - this connector is underrated I think!), down to Sabino Canyon, past the big cliffs in the Miner's Pool area and out Phoneline!

This hike started out at Box Camp Trail Head and I walked along Catalina Highway to the Palisades Trail. From the Palisade Trail to East Fork Sabino Canyon Trail to East Sabino Canyon Trail to the Phoneline trail and finally to the visitors Center. The hike was mainly down hill (6127 feet) but it is long. There are great views all along the trail but particularly on the Palisade Trail. This was my first time on the Palisade Trail and I thought it was impressive. Normally I prefer to hike uphill, it's easier on the knees and feet but on this hike I'm glad I chose top to bottom. Since this trail follows along ridges and high along canyons there wasn't much water along the way. The exception was Mud spring on the Palisade Trail and east Fork Sabino Canyon. The Palisade Trail was easy to follow and fairly well maintained. The other trails are more heavily traveled and I consider them super highways. Bring a camera and take lots of pictures.

Started at the Visitors center around 5pm, made it about halfway along the phone line trail then headed back. Hiked the last 2 miles in the dark with a headlamp and a flashlight. Spotted plenty of wildlife and Sabino Creek was flowing. Lots of Tarantulas and Wolf Spiders.

As I walked out of the house at 0530 to head over to Sabino Canyon to hike Blacketts Ridge, I saw the start of a bright white contrail in the northeast sky. From having seen something like this previously, I knew it was a White Sands Missile Range test. Very 8) !

I don't get over to Sabino as much as I used to, since it is a 20+ mile drive across the city from where I live. In fact, I hadn't been there since last October 18th! I have always liked doing Blacketts, and think it is the best short conditioning hike in town that isn't entirely on a road. Plus you get to enjoy some of the finest desert scenery in the area.

The low temperature at my house this morning was a pleasant 64 degrees about the time I started hiking, so that made it quite enjoyable. Cooler temperatures make a world of difference when you are chugging uphill! :) Great morning out there, with a rocket launch to make it special. :D

My second day of vacation started off rotten, since I worked until after 2:00pm, but I decided to salvage it with some desert hiking. I picked this one for two reasons:

1. I wanted something more leisurely after yesterday's Wrightson trek.
2. I don't want to keep having to explain why I've never been to Sabino Canyon.

Anyway, I headed out at about 95F, despite polite warnings from the ranger at the visitor center. It didn't seem like much of a hike at first, but I enjoyed seeing the cholla and prickly pears in bloom. The highlight was finally seeing a Gila Monster in the wild after 17 years of hiking in AZ. I heard it first, a ponderous scrabbling in fitting proportion to the sound of a "regular" lizard. I got a few good pics despite its eagerness to flee.

As the sun got low, the flower-shooting improved remarkably and people poured into the park in droves. There were only four or five cars in the lot when I arrived, but it was packed and getting fuller when I left at dusk.

I took the Phone Line Trail into the canyon and then took the road back out. I started around 0700 and had shade until I reached the switchbacks at the end of the Phone Line Trail. I took a little rest at tram stop 9 to get all the rocks out of my shoes and then jogged out of the canyon on the road.

There weren't many wildflowers to speak of, but the cacti (I feel silly using this word) were starting to bloom. There were fewer lizards than I have seen on other recent hikes in the area but I did see several very cute, chubby squirrels.

Did the loop starting with Bear Canyon, stopped at Seven Falls, then continued onto Sabino Canyon taking the Phoneline out. I am not sure if I agree with the AEG in this write up. My GPS logged 2644 ft, when I uploaded my log and did SRTM sync it calculated 4593 ft. It didn't "feel" like 4000 ft.

Edited to change to Joe's calculated AEG.

Mountain lion! I arrived in Tucson shortly before the mountain lion scare that closed Sabino Canyon in 2004. I started hiking there when it reopened and gradually went on to hike many areas around the state and West. While on my first hikes in Sabino I was constantly looking up onto the ledges to see if there was a mountain lion lurking and ready to pounce. This morning at 7:45 I saw one for the first time! This young lion was calmly walking the Phone Line Trail into the canyon near the Rattlesnake Creek bridge below us on the road. The lion was about 50 yards directly across from us but the trail curves into the side of Blackett's Ridge where we were, so it was about 75 yards by trail. What an awesome sight! The lion soon stopped and looked back at the three of us and a couple who came up behind us. After deciding we weren't interesting, it went on around a curve in the trail where we could no longer see. After calling to report the sighting, we went on. We never saw it again, but later ran into a Ranger who said it had also been sighted coming down the Blackett's Ridge Trail that morning. So there really are mountain lions in Sabino Canyon! Pay attention. P.S. We had just stopped to watch a 7-8" desert tortoise just before we saw the lion. Great morning for wildlife.

My husband and I enjoyed this trail. We opted to take the tram in and got off at stop 8. There is a beautiful rock formation over which Sabino Creek flows over. Water flow was fairly low but the water pool was still plenty large enough for swimming. We walked up the road to stop 9 and then took the switchbacks up to the Phone Line trail. Prickly Pear was in full bloom along with Ocotillo and Saguaro. It's a nice trail and saw quite a few people in each direction. We were lucky in that the high was around 85 with a steady breeze. We opted to take the switchbacks down to tram stop 1 and we enjoyed being along the creek for a while before taking the tram back to the parking lot. There are lots of morning walkers along the tram route. Elevation gain is almost nothing except for the switchbacks up to the trail and down to the creek towards the end. We aren't concerned about heights but for someone who is, it might be considered a bit of a drop off as you hug the mountain the whole way.
