Finally a cool day. Early morning temp in the high 40,s. Left the Sabino canyon parking lot and headed out on the Bear canyon trail. A lot of people out early. Picked up the phone line where the road tee's. Hiked along the trail to the end. Not many hikers on the trail past the big flat rock. I did meet two park rangers hiking who were tracking the number of hikers on the trail and their destinations. Seemed odd to encounter them, but then you never know who or what you meet on the trail. At the trail end I headed down the half mile to the hard road running through the canyon at tram stop nine. I chose to hike out on the hard road back to the visitor center. This was a little over a nine mile hike according to my GPS. A beautiful day.

Parked at the Trailhead for Pima Canyon, then took off up and over to Mt Kimbell, dropping off water stashes. Pack started at 60# but was down to around 45# by the time I was working my way past The Window. Trail was really rough and overgrown, so vested a couple of hours cutting out the thorny stuff, then picked up the pace up to Cathedral. At the saddle below Cathedral Rock ran into some lost souls out of water... gave them directions to some of my Arizona Tea stashes from an earlier hike (weeks later checked... bottles were emptied but one had a $20 bill stuffed in it!)

With the much lighter pack and ten hours into the day, picked up the pace. Ran down into Sabino and around to the paved road...then around and out Phoneline.

The original idea was to train up to do all the ridges and canyons in one day. Not sure I'm going to hit that goal. Up Pima, down/up Finger Rock, down/up Ventana, down/up Esperero (to Cardiac),then around and down Sabino, up to Bear and down past Seven Falls... The BIG LOOP.

It still is an inviting and interesting idea... but, all that training and staging. Not sure I'm up to that any more?

From visitors center I missed a turn and therefore had to double back to get to the trail. Nice surprise for me as I pictured a fire road type trail as I'm used to seeing along phonelines and power towers. This is single track, in good shape with a climb at of 636 feet in a series of switchbacks. Used a GPS for the first time today to get the time, distance and altitude gain. I took the tram road back as it was getting late, hot and I wanted to make some time. Wished I could have done Sabino Canyon Trail, but did not want to wait until 9 AM tram to trailhead nor did I want to add the 8 miles round trip from visitors center to Sabino Canyon Trailhead. Will have to do that hike in spring or fall.
