Joel hiked the road and I did the phone line loop because I felt like I was going to vomit from eating too much lunch. I didn't want to go uphill too much feeling that way. However, I didn't lay off as I didn't want Joel to be left waiting for me too long so jogged the road back to the visitor center.

Great slice of Sabino for my after work adventure. Started out from the parking lot with my newly updated annual pass, up Phoneline to Blackett's Ridge. Made pretty good time, up to the top in 1:08. Took a quick break, then went back down to Phoneline and headed north all the way to Sabino Canyon. Connected back up with the road for a return trip in the twilight. Great weather, it is a strange experience for an afternoon hiker such as myself to look forward to the point when I am out of the shade and back into the sun... :-k Great views, only saw a few other people until I joined back up with the road, then I saw quite a few.

After lunch walk with my wife and Wildcat daughter. Took the tram up Sabino Canyon - first time for us- and walked back. Enjoyable afternoon!

Really nice hike in Sabino Canyon down from the last tram stop to the visitor center. I've lived in Tucson for 10 years and hiked all around this area but had never been on this trail. So my wife and I enjoyed a great day out. Not too difficult, except for the short climb up to where the trail departs from the one going further up Sabino Canyon. Excellent views all the way. Climbers may recognize a couple of the pics of Kors Wall.

First, I am using AEG data from an existing GPS route for the trail, that I synced, added the miles for the road, and then added 22 extra feet to round out the hike AEG, since I know I did more hiking back on the road, and also doing a segment of the Bear Canyon Trail.

I set out for Blackett, but skipped that as I was tired from yesterday. However, I went the length of the trail and that wasn't much easier. Really enjoyable, and a place I wish I visited sooner. Sabino has a much different feel than any other Catalina Canyon I have been in. The creek is flowing nicely, and it was an all around great afternoon.

I had only a couple of hours this morning to get out. The parking lot at the visitor center was full, signaling the beginning of the high season. Winter visitors are slowly trickling into Tucson, as I spotted a number of out-of-state plates in the lot.

It's amazing that only two weeks ago that the ocotillo were a dark green - today their leaves are a yellow to light gold. I'll post a picture later.

Still lots of water in the creek.

Note to Joe: I did not notice that there was an update ready for HAZ Tracks until I got home, so I didn't get to check the time recording function.

Ocotillo are turning yellow, and a few yellow leaves on the cottonwoods.

After work loop hike: up Phoneline, down Phoneline connector, up Sabino Road, then back on Sabino Road. Watched a brilliant sunset, spooked a rattlesnake, had dinner in the canyon, got sprinkled on, and just in general had a great evening.

Author's note 9/6/14: I discovered today that my GPS info was not correct. Therefore I corrected the length & time of the trip.

Okay, go ahead and laugh. :sl: I know I probably just posted the longest ascent and roundtrip times for Blackett's Ridge on Hike Arizona. I thought I had gotten in much better shape over the last 3 months than was evident today. I had multiple little old ladies pass me going in both directions while I was still ascending. Nonetheless, I made it to the top, and it was worth the effort. What a view!

After resting a bit, I headed back down after checking my bank balance to see if I could cover the cost of an helo evac. I look forward (really) to my next attempt and a better trip time.

NOTE: I had reviewed a GPS track (Saddleback 5001 SCRA) that I believe was submitted by MrBadBern. I would like to try to get to Peak 5001, but it wasn't readily apparent to me when I looked around the end of the Blackett's trail where one would head down from there to cross the saddle to 5001. Is it pretty much a bushwack?

After work hike up lower Phoneline and first 1/2 mile of Blackett's Ridge. I felt much better than Sunday morning when I attempted this. I suspect an electrolyte imbalance that morning. Lot's of water in Sabino Creek where Bear Canyon Road crosses it. I came across a doe and fawn heading towards the water. Great evening, too bad I had to turn around, as dinner awaited me.

I felt wonky from the time I got out of bed, but since I had a free morning, I was determined to hit the trail.
Late start. I had wanted to attempt Blackett's Ridge, but it's already hot and humid after last night's huge downpour. Where last week I motored up Phone Line, this week I'm struggling just to get to the Blackett's Ridge junction. :( A hiker at least 10 years older than me comes down off of Blackett's looking daisy fresh. :x I decide to at least put an effort into trying the trail; I'm able to get about 1/2 mile up the trail before I have to turn around. ](*,) I get back to the junction with Phone Line where I'm Googling for a 12 step program for outdoors addiction when a trail runner stops to tie his shoes - he's already been up and back on Phone Line and is now adding Blackett's to his workout. :oplz: Feeling somewhat better after resting, I headed up Phone Line a bit so at least I could record some respectable mileage. I did manage to get to Phone Line Link so I could complete a loop back the visitor center.

It was nice to see a lot of water in the creek. There were quite a few people headed up to enjoy the water.

Morning hike around this loop. This was the first time for me on the first half from the visitor center, up Phoneline, then down the Phoneline Link Trail. Impressive. I'm looking forward to completing Phoneline and going up Blackett's Ridge within the next couple of weeks.

Good After work hike in the afternoon. I started out from the parking lot and went Bear Canyon to Phone Line to Sabino, and took the road back. I really enjoyed the Phone Line trail, good views most of the way, with enough elevation gain to get some good exercise. I had 4.9 miles on my GPS from the visitor center to the intersection with the #23 trail, walking the road back saved me about 3/4 of a mile, but I did get some shade being deeper in the canyon. I didn't see anyone on the way out, but passed about a dozen folks on the road on the way back. Humid day, but not horrible, I brought a gallon and drank a little over 3 liters. I might actually have to opt for the tram one of these days so I can get in deeper to the Sabino trail, I only got to explore about 3/4 of a mile before i had to turn around and start heading back. Didn't make it home to Phoenix until almost 8:30 as it is.

I think I have the trails right-- 9L will have them correct since he collects them :D

Bear Canyon - :next: Seven Falls - :next: Bear Canyon - :next: East Fork - :next: West Fork to Hutch's Pool - :next: Sabino Cyn - :next: Phone Line Trail

This is an awesome loop that will definitely be repeated in the spring when more water is flowing. There's amazing views the entire way. Wildlife was good today-- we saw a bunch of deer, a roadrunner with a fresh lizard kill, and a snake scare a wren out of a saguaro. I didn't know snakes could climb cactus. We only ran into a handful of other hikers all day.

Big loop with Kyle on a Friday. We started from the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center and made a counter clockwise loop. We made stops at Seven Falls and Hutchs Pool. Both were very cool and had some pools of water. Not much was flowing. We finished our loop along Sabino Canyon. This is a really beautiful area that I hope to return to someday.

Bushwack to an Saddleback 5001 in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. 0830 start from the Visitors Center up the Phone Line trail for a couple of mile, the a straight up bushwack out of the canyon. When I reached the saddle I saw a large mountain lion running away (not a bad thing). That made my day! While I waited for the others to get up to the saddle, I looked for him to see if I could get at least one pic. No luck. However the rest of the day was perfect. Saw one deer in the distance, a peregrine falcon, and the first poppies of the season.
