saw my mom off this morning, then drove over to the ranger trailhead
ranger, goat hill, back on national to kiwanis, finishing on joe's favorite, los lomitas
temps were fine, gnats increased in volume and annoyance throughout the hike
haven't done the loop in awhile
will probably do just an up & back to goat hill on kiwanis or ranger for a summer after work option
a lot of people on kiwanis, and one chuckwalla

Wanted something a little different today. Headed up Lost Mine, stopping for about 20 minutes to chat with another hiker. Once we parted ways, I headed east on National over to Goat Hill, then east again and down Ranger. Lots of flowers on Ranger right now. East on Los Lomitas--tons of poppies just before you reach Kiwanis. Up Kiwanis, then west on National up to Pyramid. Down Pyramid and back to the trailhead. Lots of poppies on the top mile of Pyramid too. Saw a few lizards, grasshoppers, and some gnats. Warm today too.

I pushed off at 8:00 with the temperature a cool 48 degrees with no wind. A beautiful day with great views and no pollution in skies. I went up Ranger and over to Goat Hill then around on the National and Pyramid trails to the top of Pyramid overlooking the 'Tuke. I came back on the Kiwanis trail and cut across back to my car at the Ranger Trailhead. It was 64 degrees when I finished. 6.3 miles in 2 hours and 40 minutes with 1,300 feet of AEG.

I didn't think I had ever hiked Telegraph Pass before. Apparently it was so exhilarating the first time that I completely forgot about it.

Los Lomitas combined with the official route preloaded on Route Scout burned through my phone's 30,000mAh backup battery in 12 minutes. Apparently one of the 211 waypoints on this route occurs approximately every 14.6 feet and RS is very good at announcing all of them at a variety of distance intervals. It would be a nice hike to do alone since your Route Scout would be talking to you nonstop for the entire hike.

Not to mention, Los Lomitas is actually a very scenic trail. In the dark. I should probably do the complete loop sometime.

Not a bright idea on the "worst" bad air day in Arizona history. But it was New Year's and there are 364 more days to make up for all the carcinogens now lodged in the lungs. Zillions of cars in the park -- Summit Highway, picnic areas and stables -- but few hikers on the trail. By time MJ and I reached the National Tr, we had seemingly rose above the muck which appeared to have pocketed up against the Phoenix Mtns to the N and the Estrellas on the W and White Tanks to NW. From atop the Goat, we saw summits of Four Peaks crusted with snow and guessed at some other visible summits Woolsey to the W and Black Mtn to the S. I estimated the bad air to be about 1,500 feet to 2,000 feet elevation, or 500 to 1,000 feet above downtown Phoenix which was fairly clear from Goat. The highlight was in finding two "forests" of elephant trees along the National. Had never seen one that I recognized before. The largest (3 trees) stood only 20 paces E of the side trail up Goat Hill. I marked both spots and the mine with GPS readings, and would like to accurately put those waypoints on the route. But, alas, I don't know how. I could guess. But in this day age it seems like waypoints should move effortlessly with the route to this site's Maps section. Maybe I'll figure it out before my lungs go south after today. On return, it was dark when we hit the Summit Highway, only 7/10 of a mi from the TH. Enjoyable hike from there with the supermoon rising and pockets of cool in the draws.

I had to buy some gear for my daughter from the Girl Scout store at 16 St and Dobbins, so a trip up to the premier location in South mountain was in order. Got started about 8:40 and it was warm. Wind kicked up pretty strong once I got up on National. I took a good little break on top of Goat Hill, and then back down the way I came. Saw about 15-20 people, but had the Hill all to myself. Been up there a dozen times and still have not seen anyone else. Woo Hoo! Desert sure has dried out quickly in the last month.

Everything is pretty approximate here, from the mileage to the time to the route name! Started at the triangle parking area, and ran up the road the half-mile to the Ranger Trail crossing. Hiked Ranger up to National, then followed National over to the junction with Lost Ranch Mine trail. And, of course, visited Goat Hill! Ran most of the time on National, but of course my running speed probably isn't that much faster than some of the hiking speeds I read about. (Someone with initials including the letter J comes to mind.) Ranger isn't that exciting, but it's worth it as a quick way to get to that wonderful stretch of ridgetop on National between Ranger and the Lost Whatever trails. Those views, and the quiet out there, never gets old; didn't see anybody once I got off Ranger! No snakes either; maybe it was too early in the morning for them, or they were visiting another part of South Mountain again.

Not what I had initially planned, but this ended up working out well. Parked at I consider to be the Ranger TH (with the picnic tables and armadas, though in truth the Ranger Trail actually starts further north near the horse coral), and went up to Goat Hill and then headed back down. Since this was less than I intended and I was still feeling good, I added some miles by taking the Bajada over to the Max Delta and from there to the Crosscut which connects to the beginning of the Ranger Trail. Jogged what I could. Funny. After trying to jog up the Ranger all the other trails felt like a breeze. No wildlife. Weather was perfect. Encountered 4 hikers on the run.

I hit this trail a little after 10am on the way home from work. I put my trail runners in the wrong car so hiked in my work boots. Yikes, they are heavy :) . It was a little windy/chilly. I got sprinkled on a little here and there. I saw no other hikers. Trail is in good shape. :)

couldn't decide what to do today
weather, p.f. chang's marathon road closures, bad back and football playoffs = stay in town this weekend
can't go wrong with goat hill :)
overcast with a slight breeze and cool temps
quite a few people in the central avenue part of south mountain, but no one past the national turnoff
one mountain biker coming down ranger :o
have yet to see anyone else on goat hill
should be some good games on this afternoon and evening

decided to bail on the cards game and go for a hike with chums
i've been on the disabled list for a few weeks, so what better comeback hike than a trip to goat hill?
went up via ranger, then did the loop back on national, kiwanis and my favorite los lomitas ;)
skies were threatening when we started and we got some light rain midway through
kind of a neat day especially looking toward the estrellas
nice to do a real hike
nice to feel good
nice to hike with todd again :)

Grabbed the galoshes and headed for the cabra in the rain. Looked pretty ominous at the start, but it stayed to the west, and while it drizzled off and on, my shirt never got fully soaked, and with temps still quite warm, the whole thing was quite pleasant. It was nice to get out and enjoy rainpocalypse '16. Great to see trekkin again! :)
