Had to get back on the horse for summer afternoon hiking, so I decided to get on the Goat. I did the same trip I had done back this spring with the Earthiest, makes for a nice loop with a decent bit of effort. I got started about 5 after coming back from Tucson with a side trip to IKEA for my wife (being a nice guy helping round up stuff for her classroom). I did not see another hiker until I came down Telegraph pass, there were quite a few folks on Kiwanis. Hot trip, but got some nice shade at the end of the hike to make it all worth while. Hopefully I can get back on the hiking every week schedule now that things are calming down a bit.

I didn’t leave work until after 6 PM. Needless to say, my options were rather limited in terms of finding a nearby hike that I’d never done before, [and preferably a summit hike], where I could finish or at the very least reach the peak before pitch darkness. South Mountain’s Goat Hill fit the bill, and there were a few route variations on HAZ which came in quite handy. Initially my plan was to do a nice loop version, like the one The_Dude posted here [ gps route ] , which reaches the ridgeline via the Ranger Trail, exits via Kiwanis, and incorporates a few other trails in between…

…however, after getting up onto the ridgeline, the terrain to the West appealed to me a lot more, [sort of like when you walk into a hotel room with 2 queen beds and for one reason or another you suddenly have a preference for one bed over the other]. Besides, I’d done the Kiwanis Trail twice before AND I wanted to log at least 8 miles for the day…

…thus, after bagging Goat Hill, [which had much better than expected views for being right in the city], I headed West along the National Trail. Route Scout topo showed a couple of trail options for exiting the ridgeline to the North, and I decided to go for the one located a short distance after BM/UN 2231.

I reached BM/UN 2231 to enjoy about 30-60 seconds worth of views before pitch darkness, then got my headlamp out and continued West. Perhaps it was due to the dark, [or perhaps CalTopo is due for a much needed update], but there were more than a few trails/junctions that flat out didn’t seem to exist…

…let’s just say: I departed the ridgeline from where CalTopo showed the exit trail to be and closely monitored the topo to ensure that I would stay on track in the pitch darkness… yet the epic, badpumpkin descent left me wondering if CalTopo is in serious need of an update for that particular trail or if my trail-finding skills in pitch darkness need some serious fine-tuning, [or perhaps a little bit of both].

At any rate, I made it down and connected with the paved road, which I took for another 3 miles or so back to my vehicle. I’m not normally a fan of road finishes when I’m hiking, [especially paved ones]; but given that it was pitch dark and I wanted to log more miles, it sure beat ending the hike early and then having to finish business on the treadmill.

The Earthiest had the week off, so I arranged to meet him as I made my way back in to town from Tucson. Plus, he had never done any hiking in South Mountain, so I thought I would turn him on to Goat Hill. We got started a little after 4 from the Ranger TH, chugged our way up and then over to Goat hill for a nice little break. Views were pretty lousy as to be expected with the wind, plus there was a big fire going in south Phoenix belching black smoke all over the sky. We headed back east on National over to Telegraph Pass, and then circled around back to the cars via Kiwanis and Las Lomitas. Saw way too many people once we got on Kiwanis, otherwise we had a good bit of solitude. Great bloom out there now!

Met Larry at the triangle lot at 8:30. We headed east on Bajada, then up Ranger to Goat Hill. There was almost nobody out this morning, and the weather was still nice and cool. When we came back down from Goat Hill, we had to decide between heading east over to Kiwanis and making a short loop, or heading west down National and making a longer loop. Since it was still relatively cool, we decided on the longer loop--fine by me since I had eaten three chocolate donuts yesterday afternoon, and three more for breakfast this morning. We passed two women who were nearly having a fit about a tiny little snake on the trail. We saw it for just a second before it disappeared into a bush. Heading back east on Bajada, we took a side trip on a wash to look at some stuff we had seen from National. We were hoping it was a mine entrance, but turned out to be a sharp bend carved into the side of the wash.

Then we ran into a Canadian couple who were spending the winter in California. They asked us where we had come from, and when the trail would start to loop around. When we said that it would be about an eight mile loop no matter which way they chose, they were kind of confused and concerned. After a few minutes of discussing various trail options with them, they pulled up the app on their phone for the Bajada Trail; Larry noticed that they were looking at the information and map of a Bajada trail in Tucson. Once we got that straightened out, they decided to probably just turn around when they reached the end instead of making a loop. I was impressed that they had still managed to get on ANY Bajada Trail given the fact that they were 100 miles from the information they had pulled up. By then it was pretty warm, and no breeze, so I was glad to get back to the car. Pleasant hike, and I was glad to get this in before the weather gets too warm.

Great after work hike! My Sunday hike had me looking over to Goat Hill quite a bit, and I had been thinking that it has been too long since I made it up there. I got to the Ranger TH about 3:30 to start my hike. I had thought about the Pyramid to Goat Hill trip, but I wanted to take advantage of an earlier return to Phoenix and park closer to my home in the north valley. I had never hiked the Ranger trail before, so I combined a few trails on the fly with some help from Route Scout. Ranger is a great trail, good consistent effort up to the National trail. From here I headed east on National to Pyramid and followed that down. I found a social trail to cut across to the Lost Ranch Ruins trail, and made my way over to the ruins. I managed to get off track at one point, but I just followed the wash up to where I needed to be. From the ruins, I cross-countried it over to the Lost Ranch Mine trail. First time up this one as well, it is a good, steep grinder all the way up to the top. Briefly checked out the mine, but not too much to see. Made it over to Goat Hill for a good 12 minute break for some views and a quick snack. Gorgeous sunset to watch as I was heading down Ranger, I felt like a tourist stopping to gawk and take photos. Only my trusty cell phone cam, none of the pictures were worthy enough to post. Fantastic hike! For parking right in the middle of the park, and having very mild temps, I was surprised that I only encountered 4 hikers the whole day, my kind of hike. plus, I only had a half hour drive home from this point instead of the 45-60 I would have had from the Chandler Blvd. TH. Win.

First hike with a jacket in a long time. This is always a nice little hike. Tried out rout scout today instead of haz tracks I don't know enough about apps to tell the difference.

Ranger to Goat Hill, then made a loop with National, Kiwanis and Los Lomitas. Almost no one on Ranger, and no one on Goat Hill. :) Saw a couple people on the National (one of them trekkin gekko). The Telegraph Pass lookout was crowded, and Kiwanis was full of the usual obnoxious people. The Kiwanis TH was a circus.

Didn't see anyone on Los Lomitas, except a ranger who was putting new stickers on the trail markers at the ramada area. Stopped and talked to her for a couple minutes. She said the ramada should be open within the next few months. Not sure if that's a good thing or not... but it would also make a good trailhead for this loop.

my sunday hikes should not be on south mountain
between the chilly temps and wanting to see the cardinals play, my window was too small for something more interesting or adventurous
backup plan = goat hill ;)
correctly guessed that kiwanis trailhead would be crowded, so started from ranger
ranger to los lomitas (my favorite), up kiwanis, west on national to goat hill, back down ranger
starting from ranger adds about a half mile compared with starting from kiwanis [ gps route ]
would normally hide this, but it's a nice loop and maybe others are interested

Started from the Kiwanis trailhead, and did a Las Lomitas :next: Ranger :next: National :next: Goat Hill :next: National :next: Kiwanis loop.

This was only my second time actually hiking South Mountain, and my first was just a quick up and down on Telegraph Pass. Saw very few people. The Summit Rd closure must be keeping the masses away. The constant flies, airplanes, and shooting range noise gave me plenty of company though.

The Ranger trail had quite a few slides above the road that were pretty loose.

Not too bad for an in-town hike.

chose this loop today to:
1. celebrate my new moniker goat hill kokopelli :)
2. hit the circle k at 24th and southern for a lemonade slurpee on the way home
parked at the kiwanis trailhead and got los lomitas over with first
up ranger to national
thought about taking the use trail up the goat hill ridgeline, but will do that another time
has anyone done it?
spent a couple minutes looking around on goat hill
back on national and kiwanis
saw one guy starting up as i was finishing - no one else out
the humidity made this one special
