1st trip
Commandeered a vehicle, abandoned the passenger, headed out to bag Maricopa Peak....and then some.

Started at 19th ave TH
Headed up Ma Ha Tauk a few hundred yards, took the non-traditional ravine route up to Warrior, punched a barrel cactus, oops, ouch!

From Warrior, cross country to Alta Trail
Alta West to Maricopa Peak
Coming down Maricopa ran into 11 javelina including one tawny pinky piglet!
Skirted the javelinas, continued down Alta, spotted a trio of coyote
Break at western TH then continued along National toward Bajada.

Jogged most of Nat & Baj, reached Ranger, took a break, still had plenty of time to spare, headed up to Goat Hill, no new dead things in Fred's cave. Lunchtime!

Continued east on National stopped to water a tree spotted a really cool little alcove down a ravine so of course I went to check it out, heard some rocks moving in it, went in for a closer look heard a growl, scared the :pk: out of me, I may or may not have shrieked as I leapt up the ravine and glanced back down in time to see a gray blur launch out of the little cave thing...it stopped for a split second in which is assume it flipped me the bird then was off and out of sight...HOLY :pk: THAT WAS A BOBCAT!! :o :y:

Continued along National to Kiwanis Trail took that down to the parking lots followed the road south to Max Delta Trail then up to the Ramadas then down T-Bone trail to the jeep where I slept a good half hour before making my way to the nearest Jamba Juice...

11 javelina
3 coyotes
1 bobcat!
3 red tail hawks
1 turkey vulture
3 GIANT jackrabbits

Such a great day!

Actually started this hike from the 19th Ave. TH. I went in on the T-Bone trail. I then took the Max Delta south to the Crosscut Loop which I took east to the Ranger Trail. At this point I checked my Garmin and discovered that I had hiked 99 miles in about 15 minutes :o . Not sure why this happened, but it has happened once before. I reset my Garmin at this point but because of this I had to guesstimate on my total distance. Took the Ranger Trail up to the National and then over to Goat Hill. On the way back I took the Derby Loop over to the Max Delta to the Ma Ha Tauk Trail to complete a nice loop. A lot of trails but over all distance was under 7 miles. Saw quite a few people out there. Nice to see the trails busy.

Went Birding this morning at Tres Rios...Decided that I needed to also get a decent Hike in, so I hit this on the way home...Did 3 Trails new to me, and a section of National that I've never done either...Up Ranger, West on National to Goat Hill, back on National to Kiwanis, then hit Los Lomitas back to Ranger and then to the Escape....I know Kelly would never let me hear the end of it, if I got this close to Goat Hill and didn't go see it... :D But I have to hand it to Kelly, the Views are Stellar from there!!! :)

I wonder if Todd actually ran into Flying Ants on Maricopa Peak, instead of Flies...10 feet from the top and it was a Giant Flying Ant Hill..Luckily, probably due to the Weather, most of them weren't flying... :o And that wasn't the only Fauna that was overpopulating...I felt like I was playing Hopscotch on the whole Hike, trying to avoid stepping on hundreds of Millipedes! Wow!

Watched an awesome Storm north of Downtown, and then saw it start sweeping around to the West, covering the Estrellas...And then it started coming my way...It caught me just as I reached Kiwanis...I wouldn't have cared about getting Wet, but donned the cheapie Poncho anyway, to keep the Camera dry.... It poured for about 15 minutes and then let up...It felt Great!!! Then the Sun came out, and it became a slight Steambath for the rest of the Trip... But it felt good to be back on South Mountain again!!!! The Mountain's looking pretty good with all of the Rain...Looking forward to doing it more often now.... :)

It was only 111-degrees so it seemed a perfect day for a hike. Headed out at sunset and fought a dust storm on the way up. After that it cleared but the wind never died down. The full moon never did show itself through the clouds.

Took this route from a trekkin gecko and had a blast with Patrick and two of my vegan friends, Joey and Nathan.

Whilst awaiting the vegans, Trick and I hastily bagged the nearest peak, topping out at a whopping 3.5 feet! That's just over half a hippy tall.

Somewhere along National, at the base of Goat Hill, is a groovy little "mine" "cave" type "thing"....I found a dead critter in it, yes I poked it and picked it up and have pictures...unfortunately we aren't positive on what it actually is.
Long torso, long pointed muzzle, loooong tail, retractable claws which places it as a feline...but other than my being pretty sure it is NOT a house cat (and hoping it's a ringtail  )....no clue.

Didn't feel like hiking, but I forced myself to do a trail after work. It's been 3 days since my last hike and I didn't want to make it 4. I chose Goat Hill via Ranger because I'd never done it before, it was short and close to home. The trail is not much to look at it, but it was a nice day to be outside. Came across two hikers, a chipmunk, a squirrel and a bunch of quail.

Hiked an in and out on the Alta trail from Chandler Blvd & 19th Ave. Went up the Lost Mine trail, east on the National to Goat Hill, down the Ranger, down Summit Rd to the Bajada trail, south on the Bajada to the Alta, up the Alta trail to Maricopa Peak, down the Alta to San Juan Rd and back the way I came excluding the peaks. Saw a couple javalina on the back side of the Alta. Great weather, talked to a few people along the way. Time for a cold one and some football!

started on kiwanis, then a short bit on national to marker 33
took gila view to valley to kebo, then back east on national
went up on goat hill for a couple minutes, then down ranger and back to the kiwanis trailhead on los lomitos
saw quite a few people on kiwanis and gila view, then only three others on ranger
temps ranged from 77-96 and there wasn't much of a breeze
hotter, harder and slower than last week, but still enjoyed being out
posting under the longest segment
hadn't been on valley trail before

met up with an old friend who wanted a training hike for the grand canyon
went up kiwanis, west on national to goat hill, down ranger, then back on derby and las lomitas with some extra credit wandering around
my gps showed 2.9 miles from kiwanis trailhead to goat hill
i like kiwanis better than ranger, although i do like the section of ranger above the road
not sure what the mileage would have been without the extra - maybe a mile less
love the trip computer page on my garmin 60csx, but boy do i need to spend some time learning the other functions

hiked ranger trail to goat hill, then west on national to bajada, then back to ranger
goat hill view was awesome - 360 views from a cool little platform
was just going to do an out and back to goat hill, but had never hiked the section of national west of ranger
now i've hiked all of national at one time or another
saw one hiker on bajada
the western part of national is pretty nice, especially the views from the ridge
bajada wasn't bad - enough little ups and downs to keep it interesting
mileage is an estimate from haz and the trailhead map
elevation is a guess
nice loop

Several people on the trail today. No difficult parts on this trail. A good Alternative to Holbert if you are in the area.
