I jogged from the trailhead to the water tanks, then found a small side trail that took me over to one of the washes. I took some pictures of the petroglyphs on bird hill.

They said it was going to rain but I didn't believe them.I started out around 7:00 Friday morning. It was cloudy but no rain.I took my good camera and was going to get some pictures on the way down when there was more light. About 3/4 of the way up the rains came..They were right this time.I had to duck into Dobbins Lookout to try and keep my camera dry.I waited about 1/2 hour until the rain eased up and headed back down.It was nice to smell the rain hit the dirt but I didn't get any pictures this hike.It was still a great day.Headed home around 9:40.

I went with my son's school hiking club, from the North end to the Dobbins lookout. There were dozens of hikers on the trail today.

Also did this:

Upon reaching the
Summit Road, go straight across to continue
on the Holbert Trail to the well-marked junction
with the National Trail. From there, walk along
the T.V. Tower Road about 1 mile to Gila
Valley Lookout.

For the 7 summit challenge

Completed the Holbert trail and road to Gila Valley Lookout, it rained on me going down. The last part really needs a trail to the lookout.

I took my son and his friend mid-day up to the Dobbins point turnoff; I showed them the waterbird petroglyphs. No animals were seen.

Darn! I shoulda read the trail guide before going here with buddies on Friday! I will now have to go BACK and look for the petroglyphs.

I liked the views, and the trail is OK; excellent footing, nice steady grade. I DIDN'T like all the broken glass near the top, from beer drinkers throwing their empties as far as they can. What a mess. Somebody needs to police the top of this hill near the parking lot, and clean up the top 1000' of the trail itself.

I'm finally back on the trails, after breaking my ankle in May on the Picket Post Mountain trail. Surgery, a cast for 6 weeks, and 6 weeks of physical therapy later, I went nearly to the trail that leads to Dobbins point. There is some shade as you pass along the East side of ridges in the morning. The trail seemed a lot more rocky to me than the last time, probably because of my sensitivity to the foot.

Two women on the trail reported seeing a rattlesnake just above the water tank. Other than that, just lizards and birds.

First time hiking this trail.

Currently reading "Landscape of the Spirits - Hohokam Rock Art at South Mountain Park" by Todd Bostwick and Peter Krocek. Armed with some of their "inside" information, set out on a hike along the Holbert Trail with our desert puppy - Skippy.

Found plenty of rock art along the trail. Most is weathered and deteriorated relative to some of the other "cluster" sites I've visited lately. Disappointed by the amount of modern rock art (read: graffiti & tagging) and modern pot shards (read: broken beer bottles) also found at this site.

Climbed to Dobbins Lookout, then trekked on to N. Buena Vista Rd. Also located Box Canyon that is signed "Area Closed". Too bad, Bostwick's book indicates 242 rock art panels in that canyon. Wonder what it takes to gain access?

Had GPS with me and will forward route to Joe for posting.

TH elevation = 1322 ft
Max elevation = 2189 ft @ N. Buena Vista Rd.
Elevation gain = 867 ft

4.12 mile round trip
1.71 miles (one way) to Dobbins Lookout

Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout. Nice social hike with AOTC group. Time is moving time. Lots of waiting with a "B/C" level group. Incredible amount of horse manure at start of trail
