With perfect temperatures and a slight breeze beckoning, I decided to hike the Holbert trail for the first time since I hiked it during the PSC a couple of years ago. I had a friend with me and we chatted the entire way up, up, up to Dobbins lookout where we had a nice break to chat even more and take in the views of the city. It's an interesting view of Phoenix that I don't see very often - and the air was very clear this day. There were several people at the lookout and we met a couple of women from Toronto, in town for a conference who were surprised to hear that our weather isn't always this nice  . They also gave us some good information about the best time of year to hike Toronto (fall - after bug season, in case you're wondering).

This was first venture out after twisting my ankle a few weeks ago. I took Holbert up to Dobbins Point (37 minutes) and then continued on to the end of Holbert. Jogged what I could and hiked the rest. My ankle held up better than I hope for. And ironically as I came down it was knees that caused me the most discomfort.

Why? I like to punish myself. It was chilly and windy with the threat of rain. Dressed warmly and, even with the heat of exertion, the chill poked through when I caught the wind just right in the canyons. Up to the Dobbins Lookout and back. Had company. About a dozen others on trail above the brown water tank where it turns steep, a spot less than serious hikers or joggers take a quick exit. Two teen-age boys playing rap on an I-pod turned around after going up above the tank about 50 yards. I didn't linger at Dobbins, fearing rain. Ducked into the stone shelter, made some notes, snapped a photo or two and started the return journey. Kept my eyes on the clouds to the north where I could see rain showers and virga up around Union Hills. Thankfully, the storm moved east, not south. This is not a trail I'd want to negotiate in the rain: Big slick rocks and muddy boot soles can make for a faster than anticipated descent. Was glad to get home by the fireplace.

Somehow, in all the years I've been hiking South Mtn., I've never even heard of this trail. There's a HAZ perk for you!
Nice trail and definitely a good one to add to the rotation. It's a good climb with a fairly steady grade and nice views (water tank excepted). Went up to the Lookout, spent a few minutes gazing at the Sierra Estrellas, picked up and recycled a few Bud Light cans scattered around the picnic area, then headed back down. Still too early for flowers, but the birds were fun and the January light was beautiful.

Saw the usual rock wrens, Abert's towhees, curve billed thrashers, blue-grey gnatcatchers and cactus wrens, but also a few migrants like yellow rumped warblers and white-crowned sparrows in for the winter.

Also, the dog liked this trail, especially the downhill part. So it's a winner!

Not the full enchilada or even the whole bert, just to the lookout-n-back.

All was fab until five minutes down my sandal fell apart. Just tender footed the two miles back. Test results just in, I will not be joining the barefoot hikers club. Jogging a few areas was easier. Had to keep that to minimum when the coast was clear. I'm not as pleasant to watch running as Sir Denny!

Kiwanis and anything near Kiwanis was packed at 2pm. Fear not, Holbert has parking for a small city. While I'm not yippee skippy excited on the lower flats the hike never disappoints. The lookout was bumping. Usually I avoid it but relaxed for a few minutes in the shade of the hut for a change of pace. 10 months is too long to let this one slip out of rotation.

Hit the hills for an evening exercise stroll. The breeze made going up Telegraph rather enjoyable. Cruised on up National and made it to the old lookout to see the valley covered in a brown blanket. The trip back down Telegraph required a bit of finesse as we passed through, over and around a large group. I was unable to make any new friends. Good little workout. Awesome nighttime weather.

john got the band back together for a south mountain rehab hike
plan a was maricopa peak, but there was a memorial bike ride that blocked off everything but holbert
no matter, holbert it was
once we got to the intersection with national, we decided to check out the old holbert lookout
followed the summit road for a bit, then on an old roadbed
interesting place with some nice views of the valley
took an off-trail route back, eventually dropping down a drainage to holbert
very crowded on the way back, but to be expected
nice to hike with the boys again :)

found a link for the memorial bike event: azfamily.com/story/ ... tain

John and Kelly said I could join them if I didn't talk so much :o . :sl: yeah right? John's first hike in awhile as he is nursing some old wounds from his fight club days. He set the pace and looked like his old self. Good to see him back out on the trail. Kelly was her cheerful self until college football came up  . How about this weather :D Nice to get in a hike with this duo. Thanks! :yr: :y:

With the Steelers playing a night game, it was a nice opportunity to take the family out for a hike. I haven't hiked the Holbert Trail in over 16 years, so it seemed like a nice choice. Short enough at about 5 miles RT, and enough of a climb to provide a nice challenge.

There was some kind of family reunion type of thing going on in the parking lot as we arrived. As a result, the trail was extremely busy on our way up, but only to the junction for the Dobbins Lookout spur. Once we got there, I let the wife and kids continue along the Holbert Trail to its terminus while I hiked up to the lookout and back. Once I caught up with them, they were at the end of the Holbert Trail. After we passed the Dobbins spur junction, the trail was nearly deserted.

The trail isn't really that steep, but it also isn't very smooth at all. Lots of rock outcroppings to walk around, over, and between. This made things a bit more difficult for Dmitri, but he made it thru ok. The way down nearly took as long as going up negotiating some of the steeper sections. At the end of the hike, everyone was very glad to be done and ready for lunch, but not worn out too bad. It ended up being the perfect amount of effort. Had fun again playing with the new camera getting some zoom in shots.
