The visitor center was a bit farther than expected, about 2 miles (not just down the road as thought)...each way. Got to see a herd of mule deer (counted 9 of them!)drinking from the Gila. The cliff dwellings were about another mile, and well worth the climb!

Very nice area, in the Gila National Forest, NM. A LONG drive over (don't know where someone said 4.5 hours...more like 6!) but we got RAINED on during the drive so that made it worth it right there!

A bit hot this day for hiking, little shade on the trail and due to the area being so dry there wasn't any water in the little creek tributaries. But the water in the West Creek of the Gila was nice!! Saw some mule deer and some paw prints (a BIG Mtn. Lion and a SMALL Bear! Yikes!) and even had a skunk come visit our campsight in the early AM.

maybe 20 on the Wind Cave trail, didn't spot anybody on the ridge
started 66 AM temp was 77
ended at 9:51 AM temp was 89 Humidity 13%

tevas - camelbak, used about 70oz

This is a great hike/scramble. I swore I'd never come to this mountain again because the fee is ridiculas. A year pass is $75 which is more expensive than the Grand Canyon year pass, makes no sense. At any rate, for five bucks I think this ridgeline hike is worth it.

I passed the cave in 32 minutes going brisk. The trail past the "End of Trail" sign was really pretty good. Up to the ridge that is, then you're on you own. The ridge is big honkin' black jagged-cut slabs of rock. The going turns into a snails pace but it's fun searching for the stable rocks.

Good views all around.

Being the moron I am, I did this hike after skipping a nights sleep. My balance was unstable to say the least. I fell on the return. My hand & wrist took a beating. It looks like I was playing patty-cakes with Freddy Krugger.

If you're planning on doing Wind Cave, do yourself a favor and keep on goin! Thanks to ck1 for posting this one.

About 18 on the trail. More just short cut right to the creek so that makes up a lot of the parking madness.

A storm TRIED to break off the rim. After 11am was breezy with spring fresh scent!

tevas - camelbak
easy stroll throughout

Moderate garbage. New signage since last year. Or maybe I didn't go last year! Can't remember. I think the huge Wilderness sign was thrashed. Lots of bicycle tracks and even SAW two bicyclers WAY in the wilderness. Maybe it's been re-zoned? ya right

Such a great hike. Always popular but even more so now as it's about the only ticket in town!

I still don't get where the FS calls this a FOUR mile hike one-way to Bell Crossing. That's just NOT right

Reading all the forum posts about the HAZ hike last weekend made me want to give this trail a shot, so on Sunday, April 28 my buddy Tony and I headed out to Roger's Canyon. On the way in, we noticed a rather interesting (dry) water cache across the
wash. Once the road gained elevation, the
views were spectacular. We had a few guests at the trailhead. The trail itself was easy to follow; until we got to what we believed was the junction. Since the sign only indicated the trail we were on (Reavis Ranch Trail) and not the Roger's Canyon Trail, we figured we were supposed to turn left and head toward the creek. Along the way, we noticed an interesting tree ornament hanging over the trail. We were enjoying the hike so much; we overshot the ruins and ended up in Angel Basin (I think Fritzski mentioned it in his post). The views were wonderful!
Backtracking, we saw what we believed to be the ruins. After scrambling up the slope, our hunch was confirmed by the forest service. After exploring the lower level ruins, we followed the path to the second floor. These ruins are amazingly well preserved. They reminded me of the ones at Tonto National Monument. The structures were
just amazing. We were careful to look but not touch. After exploring and a quick snack, we headed back, catching one last glimpse of the ruins from the trail. Our hike took about 5 hours. We keep a mild pace and took our time. We passed several people heading in when we were heading out. If you head out to Roger's Canyon, remember that the trail junction is no longer signed where you need to turn left. I believe it's about a mile and a half from the trailhead. Overall, this is a great hike, I'm sure I'll be back!
