The plan was a healthy 18-km Canada Day hike to Cruickshank Canyon Lookout and back. Well, best laid plans. There was a heatwave down in the lowlands, but up here the snow was just beginning to melt. Once the trail started to climb it was mud, mud, mud, interruped by Dean Booth album-scapes of half-melted snowbanks. Eventually the trail hit solid snowpack, and when the footprints began to fade I remembered the legend and turned back to try going the other way around Lake Helen MacKenzie. Nice views of the lake, with a campsite that's entirely up on boardwalk, whether to avoid the snow or the mud I don't know. Turned back when the trail disappeared into snowpack again. It was drier and quite pleasant back in the lowlands; lots of people taking advantage of the holiday, including a group of runners doing laps on the Paradise Meadows loop. |
