Left the TH at dawn. N-O-B-O-D-Y was on the trail. There was water in the creek and the canyon was greener than I've ever seen it. At the point where the trail crosses the stream for the last time, heading back to the east side, there was enough of a pool to support tadpoles and some wee little frogs. Also, humid. Whenever I stopped I had bugs in my eyes, nose, ears... Passed one group and one solo hiker on the way down.

Driving back out, I saw a pair of roadrunners, a covey of quail, and a large black snake winding across the road. :o

Walked with Mom and Cliff from the Paradise parking lot intending to go as far as the waterfall. Mom couldn't make the last hill so we went up to the falls individually. The meadows were packed with wildflowers, and the overcast had completely burned off on the drive up to the Mountain.

Hiked up to the Saddle and back. I've definitely been a flatlander too long! Still, not wheezing too badly considering that's higher than Cuzco. And it's always good to thoroughly rinse your lungs out with pine-scented air!

Started out from the TH shortly after (official) sunrise, probably my last hike in the PHX area until summer's over. Saw some ground squirrels and "slow elk" on my way in. The slog up the western side of the canyon seemed a lot easier today than last time. The parking lot was full of empty beer cans :x ; next time I'm bringing a garbage bag.

It's hard to imagine a nicer trail than the Tonto - an easy, undulating trek down the middle of some of the most spectacular scenery on earth, traversing scrubby slopes and dipping back into mini riparian zones. Best of all, no pools of mule urine to navigate!

My first hike using MRE's, which were pretty tasty, if the heaters were a bit tricky to figure out. Unfortunately my ankle started acting up a mile out from Indian Gardens (delayed result of a spill on the South Kaibab), and made for a long slog up Bright Angel after bumming some Ibuprofen from another group.

Kaibab TH -> Tonto Junction: 2:40
Tonto Junction -> Indian Gardens: 2:30
Indian Gardens -> Bright Angel TH: 3:35

Started out from Canyon Lake with P & D & Bailey the Brindle Boxer. Nice day, didn't get too hot at all. D took Bailey back to the car after about an hour, and later met us at the First Water TH.

Now that I know where the trail is, thought I'd give it another try. :) It was a nice morning, even a good breeze once I got into the shadow of the mountain, and not a soul about. I got as far as the rock-climbing part, but after a few minutes decided I didn't feel completely safe doing it on my own. Then, just to prove a point, I fell on my butt.

Wildlife sighted: Turkey vulture, kestrel (I think), slow elk (longhorn cow), jackrabbit, and one loud diamondback!

I mistakenly took the TH on the left, the one with the little hiking figures sign on it, and wound up rolling up and down the lower slopes of the mountain, then into a wash as part of the Arizona Trail Detour :?:, then southwest away from the mountain on thr AZ Trail, which eventually looped back north to the TH I should've taken in the first place! Before I hit the parking lot I met a nice couple who told me how to find the Summit Trail. I made a quick jaunt up to the mineshaft and back. So, yeah, I'm taking a wild guess at the mileage.

Great weather! The first part of the trail, as I hiked it, looks about to explode in cactus flowers in about a week or so. Lots of FAT buds on the hedgehogs, and the ocotillos and globe mallow are just beginning to unfurl.

Sky threatened all morning, then I got drenched on the far (east) side of the mtn. Dried out completely by the time I got back to the car, though. :)

Testing out new boots (a bit stiff) and a heavier pack (need to keep up the BodyPump classes). Great weather, a bit chilly starting out but warmed right up. :) As usual, saw almost no-one until I hit the Dutchman.

Must remember to hike this counter-clockwise in winter, to avoid sun in the eyes for half the trip.

Wow- this trail is completely different in the fog! Hiked to the Dutchman junction and back. Pretty quiet; startled a couple covey of quail, a cardinal, some other birds.

A sunrise jaunt to the cave and back before morning errands. Weather was balmy, actually warmer than at my house. I was mobbed by ground squirrels at the cave.

Hiked to the summit, then halfway down and took the circumferance trail clockwise around and back to the trailhead.

I wasn't blown away by this trail, but I'll probably use it training for the Canyon.

Hiked up to the saddle and back. Variable weather, mostly windy, with sun and occasional bursts of rain. The wind really picked up at the saddle!

Mileage includes the south Pine Loop Trail in, and the north Pine Loop trail out, and is mostly a guess. The little hill after the river crossing seemed like a nice place to have lunch and turn around. I don't think I made it all the way to Boulder Flat; plenty of boulders, but not much flat! Three hours out and two hours back.

This is definitely a desert trail, but 5-10 degrees cooler than Phoenix. The boulders reminded me of Texas Canyon and the Chiracahuas. There was a breeze all day and the occasional cloud to keep things pleasant.

The sun played peek-a-boo the whole trip, and I heard some ominous thunder right under the Rim, but no rain. It obviously had rained overnight or earlier that morning, though. Some animal tracks in the moist earth, including what appeared to be cougar prints at several points along the trail! Followed the Highline Trail and turned around about half an hour after the junction with TR 291, which was pretty well blocked by deadfall. There were some trees and branches fallen across the Highline as well, but nothing that couldn't be walked around of clambered over.

Navigation notes: FR284 is directly across the road from the Market in Christopher Creek, on the west side of the road.

This is a nifty little trail. Got a late start due to another hike panning out. Went as far as the point where "Sedona's Top 10 Hikes" says there used to be a plank bridge, across the creek from the Midgely bridge. Next time I'll bring my swimsuit!
